"Official" T4R Drive Cycle

Hey Guy's

So, im trying to get emissions test completed on my 2001 T4R.
Ive been to the test station 3 times and still after 200 miles of driving the Catalyst and O2 Censor still show as Not Ready.

I found a link in one of the threads to the "official" Toyo Drive Cycle, problem
is that it not going to be easy to do here in Houston.

Is there any other way or recommendations?

On some Toyota’s if your catalytic converter is marginal on being bad it will not run those 2 monitors or you may have a bad O2 sensor. For the cat monitor you have to be at operating temp drive between 40-55 mph for 3 minutes and then drive for about 15 minutes changing speeds between 35-45 mph and it will usually pass at the very end of the drive cycle if you are monitoring it with a scanner. I have set the monitor even if I deviated slightly from those speeds and stopping at stop lights when driving for the 15 minutes just don’t accelerate erratically, but I believe you have something going on. Good luck.

I would focus on just getting the O2 readiness to pass, if there are no underlying causes to it....

Keep in mind you might have to complete the cycle twice if there was an issue with something related to that system before hand.

Just FYI for 2001 and up you can still pass inspection even if 1 system is not ready. So as long as you can get one of those to pass, you will be in the clear.

If you need a place to drive go down 288 south of pearland and hwy 6, i live in that area, so doing the drive cycles were a breeze for me down there and dont forget about the frontage roads down there that no one uses to get the lower speeds.

Same issue for me last smog check. Never did get the cycle to complete. It's an insane cycle!

Keep driving it for a bit. There's no way you can safely do that cycle in Houston, but after a week it should be good.

If not, I'd just focus on the O2 sensors; in Harris County, model years 2001+ can have 1 monitor 'not ready'. (96-2000 can have 2 not ready)

I had an O2 monitor not ready on my 99 for over a year. Passed inspections, etc, no problem. Finally replaced the sensor while diagnosing a fuel pressure issue, and the next day checked the monitors on my Torque Pro app and the monitor cleared. So the sensor was bad enough to not be ready, but not bad enough to throw a code.

I'd also recommend getting a Bluetooth OBD adapter and the TorquePro app. One of the default screens shows the readiness monitors so you don't have to waste your time driving back and forth to the station. It'd be around $20 total.

Thanks for the post. I'm about to perform the drive cycle again today. I will be using the Blue Driver OBD. The rest are already clear except for catalyst and the evap which are the hardest to clear. Smog test/check is tough here in Cali.

Yeah OP - quite goofing around with service stations for 'readiness' knowledge. That is very frustrating.

You'll gain so much more information with torque pro.

Same in travis county, one unready item allowed.

I get a P0420 whenever I drive slowly, usually at deer/camp lease in johnson city, I clear it with torque pro and by the time I make it back to austin (63 miles of mostly highway), its Ready and stays ready until I drive about 5-10 mph for a mile or two, haha. Like clockwork.

Not sure why its so hard for yours to set, as others said, something else is wrong to cause that to delay or not set at all.

Update:

So I got a OBD II reader on Amazon, checked codes , readiness etc.

Replaced upstream O2 sensor with one from carparts. Com, cleared everything and went for a 15mile drive.

Checked readiness again with OBD II reader EVERYTHING GOOD!

Passed emissions same day...
