Oil Baffle Plate

While sitting on the throne, I had a random thought. Do the 5th Gens (or any 4R) have oil baffles within the oil pans? I'd assume if wheeled hard, at extreme angles, it would be possible for the oil pickup to be starved. Just a random thought.

I'm not sure of the answer to this but I was curious of he same thing as i was crawling up a large steep hill this weekend ... is there a time limit I should be cognizant of?

That's not the worry. Your random thought should have been the oil flow in the engine in high angle situations.
If you go through Mike's build thread you would find that he had a problem with this coming up ridiculous steep slopes. This problem was so unusual that real Toyota engineers examined his engine and ended up making revisions to the oil passages. Toyota also gave him warranty on his engine even though it was out of warranty.

I know there are more details in a thread somewhere but he was very open about the situation and from what I recall Toyota took care of him and it was a very unique set of circumstances.

On the Land Rovers I've owned in the past, the engines had quite deep oil pans and the pick up was in a very low portion of it. They also had 6 1/2 quarts of oil in them.

Since this Toyota engine was specifically designed for an off-road 4x4 vehicle, I would imagine it's similar to the land rover.

With that said; it still wouldn't be a good idea to park a truck on a 45 degree slope with the engine running and get out to take pictures for several minutes.

The most recent model Range Rover using Jaguar engines have deeper pans than Jaguar and with a seven quart capacity.
 
I was thinking with the 6.6 qts that the 5th gen 4R's take, I figured it was to have a deep oil pan with the pickup down low. Honestly, I probably won't ever wheel that hard (at least not anytime soon) but it just dawned on me. And I figured I'd give you guys something to think about and discuss. However, that does bring up another excellent point, oil flow. I figured as long as the oil is getting picked up, the areas that need oil would be getting the necessary lubrication.

I will have to take a look at [MENTION=77684]WarnerD9[/MENTION]'s thread just to feed my curiosity. And maybe I will have another random thought.
 
One of the engineers can expand or correct me on this but oil flow in an off-road high angle situation would be similar to that of sustained high g-force in a track car. You may be picking up oil, but it eventually pools in the cylinder heads, draining the pan and starving the pick up and you end up right back in the same situation.

Hopefully this is the "flow issue" that Toyota addressed. Lexus addressed this in the 5.0L V8 (2UR-GSE) by adding oil return pumps to the cylinder heads right from the beginning because of the nature of the vehicles the engine was intended for. I don't think that's feasible from a price point perspective on the 1GR.

Odds are they expanded existing channels and/or added additional channels in key places.

The two part pan is heavily baffled in the upper section. In addition, it has a windage tray between the upper pan/block and crankshaft.

The scavenge pump Yamaha installed in the UR Series F engine is a neat piece... Good idea bringing that up as an example. With everything else being equal, a 90 degree V8 has more need for it than does a 60 degree V6. I have a 2UR-GSE in the garage, if anyone wants to see the scavenging parts.

The main issue is as was pointed out, in steep enough angles oil doesn't effectively drain from the upper portion of the engine.

Looking at WarnerD9's (thanks for the link) failure, the current design of the scavenge pump would have been useless. It draws pooled oil from the outer front corners of the cylinder heads. It would not be terribly difficult to have it scavenge several areas of the cylinder heads, but not something for the every day person to get into.

I'd actually like to to see that. Event in all the times I've serviced those engines, it was just that service. Those engines were, dare I say, flawless. There was never a need to really tear into one or examine the components that closely.

Yeah, totally interesting to see that sort of a failure. I would've never guessed something like that could happen.

And some people here think they wheel their 4Runner hard going down dirt roads or putting a wheel up on a rock...

For the umpteenth time, the 4Runner will continue to go much further than your confidence will. People like Intruder, Mikey, Harper and Warner have shown that time and time again. This is why all the new guys need to read stuff instead of just asking.
