With so many people having to pry and scrape off the drain plug gasket, perhaps it's just supposed to stay there for a few years? I could see how a "semi-permanent" gasket would be helpful if an owner was getting their oil changed at places like Jiffy Lube and Walmart, which are less likely to have to correct gasket.

Can someone confirm this in a real TMC shop manual? I don't have one.

I just left it there for the first 2 or 3 oil changes, it did not leak a drop. It eventually came off with the plug in a later oil change, at that time I replaced it with a new copper one.

I do not change these plug crush ring/gaskets every oil change. Maybe I am supposed to, but so far no oil leaks. I DO however use the filter drain and replace both O rings in the filter canister every time. I do not Bubba tighten the plugs, just snug is fine.

By the way I end up changing oil about every 6 to 8 weeks @ 5k intervals. So if it ever does drip a little it will not be for all that long, but like I said no evidence of oil dripping so far.

So don't sweat it if you have not changed the plug gasket. Just do it next time if it makes you feel better.

If you guys take a careful look at a new OEM Toyota drain plug gasket it's not just a plain crush washer; it's actually a crush washer coated with gasket material on both sides...that's why it get stuck after being on there for 10k miles. Because of this gasket coating, it's probably even more imperative you change it every single time to ensure zero leaks down the road

For what it's worth, I had to scrape mine off at 2,000 miles. So while I think we all understand the importance of replacing, the "sticking" part remains a mystery...

I received a couple free oil changes from Rodland Toyota in Everett, WA when I purchased my truck. Before they zeroed out the invoice it was for 74.99.

Mine charges $49.99, and $99.99 for each diff / transfer case. I just had my last free service, and I'm on the fence. I don't save much doing it myself, and I trust this particular to do the work. This is the first time in a loooooooooong time I haven't been doing my own service, and it's kinda nice. I must be getting older! Like I said, on the fence.

Just changed mine this weekend. Gotta admit, I don't look forward to it because of all the removal to get to things but.... cutting off the "nibs" on the front of the skid plate makes things easier. I HATE coming in after someone else changed the oil (dealer freebies are over and my Wife occasionally sneaks one in) everything is over-tightened, gaskets missing, etc.

yup...i am on the fence as well; but i am leaning towards doing it myself if i can save a few bucks; because I'm cheap. But yeah, I have not paid for an oil change since college (1999). But i am feeling mightly lazy lately...heh.

Not starting an oil war or debate here. I just want to add to the collective knowledge of fellow motor enthusiasts.

I personally do not use the M1 0W-20 Fuel economy because of its very low Phosphorus and Zinc content(ZDDP). The major elements that prevents meta to metal wear. Here's the Mobil1 chart of its ZDDP contents on oil I personaly only use ones with no less than 1000PPM to keep the wear to a minimum.

Which oil do you run then? I thought ZDDP was more important for older engines, but isn't as necessary in newer engines like ours. Can't other additives in the package reduce metal to metal wear the same as ZDDP?

Is there any brand of 0w-20 that contain <1000ppm of ZDDP?

I thought the general consensus of TMO 0w-20 or even M1 0w-20 is that they were pretty solid oil choices for us.

FWIW I purchased a case of 10 OEM Toyota oil filters off of ebay last week for $40.00 with free shipping. It shipped from a Toyota dealer in Virginia and I received it two days after I purchased it.

If I can prevent premature wear on my motor due to EPA manadates on oil I'm doing it.
