read the thread and find out!So I've got Toyota care so I haven't had to do this yet - Why in god's name isn't the oil filter setup like it was on the FJ....I have to take my skid plate of EVERYTIME......
:wtf:
Actually 3 inches. Thanks for tip - haven't done 1st change yet and was wondering if I wanted to grind on skid tabs. One tip...
to get the skid plate off you need just a tiny bit more clearance than what a stock ride height 4runner has.
Antman suggests grinding part of the tab off of the factory skid plate. I'm being one for not wanting to cut or pernamently change a brand new vehicle I decided to just get more space.
Just drive or jack your car onto two 2x6s stacked on top of each other. This gives you an extra 4" to be able to tilt your skid plate and unhook it from the cross member.
Also anyone try the K&N filter cartridge?

Of course, I will do it myself out of sheet pride and stubbornness. But the whole time I will be asking myself is this shit really worth saving $100 a year?
From the photos I have seen in this thread, my guess is that these bolts are not really bearing any significant loads, and so Toyota may use inexpensive (i.e. chitty) bolts in these particular applications.
yes, 4WD models still require driveshaft lube in 6 locations: 2 slip yokes and 4 u-joints.I am considering a new 4Runner to "supplement" - not replace- my current 4th Gen, and I came across this thread regarding the oil change. This is definitely not something I am looking forward to considering how easy it is for me to change the oil now.
One thing I have not seen mentioned is whether the 5th Gen requires lubing the driveshaft like the 4th Gen does. Does the 5th Gen driveshaft require grease like the 4th Gen or is it sealed like on many other vehicles?
Lubing the driveshaft probably takes more time than changing the oil on my 4th Gen, especially because my 4th Gen's ground clearance keeps shrinking as the vehicle ages .... as measured by the distance between the vehicle and my stomach....![]()
But my God, my God. What the hell was the genius (idiot?) thinking who designed this oil change system. Nothing like needlessly complicating one of the most basic and essential maintenance requirements.
