Oil Change 5th Gen: How To- LOTS of PICS!

Changed oil of my 2016 SR5 today and it was a mess. Obviously dealer overtightened the oil filter. The metal indicator with the plastic piece was the first one to broke. I used a breaker bar and finally removed the filter. But when I reinstalled it I broke other pieces too... Now the Motivx tool oil filter wrench I used was also also broken in the center area! I did add the new oil in but now how can I replace the new oil filter housing without causing further damage? I could wait for the next oil change but really want to fix it sooner. Saw someone recommended a better filter housing but I’m not sure if it fits better than OEM parts.

That one looks good. Did you use the same motivx filter wrench too? I’m concerned I may break it again as the filter cap is still very tight.

And do you still use the same torque 18ft-lb for the metal cap too?

I just use a metal filter wrench that has a 1/2 drive spot on it. Something like this, think I got it at Advance Auto

It was the same one that fit the plastic housing. As far as torque goes I just snug it down after hand tightening. 18 ft lbs is probably about right.

The one you mentioned from Amazon, $20, but some reviewer with low ratings said it's not designed for this 4runner engine so the size is not the same. there's a picture showed it does look different. And it's made of resin, not aluminum.

Any suggestions?

Like I said in the previous post, you need to swap over the filter cartridge stem piece in the middle from your plastic one. Besides that piece, they are identical. The review I think you are talking about, he is referring to the stem in the middle, which is simple to swap (Camry, Tacoma, Tundra, 4runner all use the same housing, but may have different filter heights)

Why do you think it's not alumimum? It definitely is.

That is the piece I keep referring to swapping from the plastic one that you currently have. There are just a few tabs holding it in, then you can spin it to remove and swap it over to the new housing. At the end of the day it doesn't matter that it came with a shorter or longer stem in the middle, just use the perfectly fine one you have. Each Toyota vehicle takes different lengths and this metal housing isn't vehicle specific.

I suppose it could come with all the different length ones Toyota uses between Camry, 4runner, Tundra, etc.

I purchased my 2016 runner in july 2016 .. was a forum member a year before I did the purchase . That is why my runner never has been back to the dealership .. no oil changes no problems LOL... very happy as I do all the work.

yes I purchased the oil filter tool cap Motivx ..works great because some idiot did not mess with my runner.

when the cap is put on IMO about a half turn before the key is aligned then the cap begins to get snug and then I place it in the same position ..

2 reasons this was a PITA .. they over torqued it 1 plus turn , and no oil on the O ring.. no oil that will be a bad day on that rubber..

if it is not leaking then get your parts all set up prior to the next oil change...

how many pan bolts did they break ? if none they may have not done the oil changes ...

I leave the pans off for a few days and check for any leaks ALL the pans off... also grease the drive shafts ..

Antman, Thanks so much for posting the well thought out tutorial. I'm a retired fleet mechanic and know very well that the oil change guy is probably just learning his trade. Or learning that he picked the wrong field! I'm going to let Toyota do the fluid check and tire rotation and do the oil change myself. I need to justify the 2 post lift in my garage!

After the new tech at my favorite local shop installed the filter O-ring incorrectly and just about ruined my engine, I decided to start doing it myself and used this tutorial. Great writeup and great pics, [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]!

I can't see the pics in the first few pages and wanted to see the correct location that the oring should be placed. Can anyone help me with how to view Antmans pics or send me a pic with the oring installed in the correct spot?

Say a plastic filter housing broke as well and say one forgot to switch out the middle stem before trashing the plastic housing. How much of an effect will it have on the filtering capabilities?

WOW! 62 pages on doing an oil change. I think I'll stick with my '03 V8 as long as possible, I LOVE spin-on filters, you can fill them up before installing and remove and replace without disassembling half the undercarriage.
Never did see if anyone endorses the replacement spin-on filter arrangement advertised in the Toyota 4 Wheel Drive Owner magazine.
How about it, anyone converted to it?
