They worked like a charm for me.
Couple hundred thousand people had them work fine.
Suspect it must have been a defective nipple casting.
Could always go with this one... all stainless.

Drain valves such as Fumoto attach to the oil pan, not the oil filter housing. I strongly suggest you search "change oil 5th gen 4runner" on YouTube and watch more than one video before attempting your first oil change. I use this tool to remove the oil filter housing https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XTAGHU0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I recommend using a 24mm socket on the tool if the housing is overtight. Have done plenty of oil changes before but this will be the first on the 4Runner and first using cartridge filters, used to the typical spin on cans.
That's the tool I have, also grabbed the aluminum housing replacement. Appreciate the link.

I have not used that tool and didn't know those were available to drain the housing. It appears one has to remove that valve to fit a tool to removing the oil filter housing. I don't use the plastic "thingy" drain that comes with the filter. Filter change is messy but I don't mind.
Do you know about the front "J" hooks on the OEM steel skid plate? I straightened the last quarter inch 45 degrees to make skid plate removal easier when using ramps.

Yeah, I have never used a valve or one of those drain tools which is why I was curious.

And then started reading about the PITA of the bolts on the stock skid plate being a pain when they get a bit corroded so ended up picking up an after market skid plate with a seperate cover for the oil filter so I can just forgo having to remove the entire skid each time. lol.

I use one of those to drain the filter housing. I don’t bother with the tubing just a normal drain pan. I only use it for a minute or less to make pulling of the housing a little less messy. I could never get the plastic spout in, no leverage the way I crawl under the truck.

Fumoto is sending me out a new valve, no charge, and also provided me with a return label for the broken one. All free of charge. Their customer service is fantastic and was really quick to reply (during normal business days). I'll try the valve again on the next oil change. Hopefully the one I got for my Jeep doesn't have the same issue, that one will go on in a few weeks.
Just finished my first oil change on my wife's 4runner after she went through the 25k miles in free services in a year. This directions made it very easy to follow. I've never had to use an oil filter of this type on my other cars so a bit of a learning process.
Ran into one hiccup though when trying to use a Fumoto drain plu valve. Screwed it on finger tight and then a socket to snug it into place. Made it less than an 1/8 turn past finger tight and the entire valve body sheared off leaving the threaded neck in the oil pan. Quick run to Ace Hardware and bought a one way screw remover which worked perfect.
Definitely will not be trying the Fumoto again and won't be using the one I also bought for my Jeep's next oil change.

Such a bummer. Bad casting? Since brass can't handle overtorquing, I used a Torque Wrench to install my Fumoto drain valve. No problems so far.
Did my first oil change on the 4runner since I bought in 2017. Dealer has done all the oil changes since new. Great guide from OP and I watched a few videos. I change out the plastic housing with the metal one. :cheers: simple to do.
Only hiccup was one TRD skid plate bolt, I used PB blaster to clear all the holes and rethreaded one hole to clear out the build up. After that the bolt went in without issue. Took about 30 minutes taking my time , checking the guide and watching video as I went.
Does the metal filter plug on the housing have to be removed? Seems like it can be left on but might be tad more messier? Overall it was a simple change and able to access everything without using ramps or a jack.

I don't remove the lower plug and so I have some oil on my hand. I use a large enough catch pan.

Last oil change was done by the dealership under the toyogard plan and I was coming up on needing one. I'd previously purchased the metal filter housing and an EZ flow drain valve and filter, so all I needed was the oil..
The entire process took a bit longer that expected. For one, the tech who installed the plug at the last change must have really cranked down on it, the crush washer was pretty well stuck to the pan. Also, I've got an RCI front skid, so that had to come off to install the EZ flow drain valve..Otherwise, everything went super smooth and will take a fraction of the time on the next change..
Did have a question for anyone who has used the EZ flow valve..They have an o-ring on them instead of a gasket..I didn't put a new gasket on, just cleaned the surface and used the o-ring..no leaks, but wanted to see what other have done..thanks.

I love all the images showing step by step. Just wondering what year your 4Runner is… my 2021 4Runner (SR5) does not display an oil pressure indicator light which is a pretty important final step after doing an oil change. I wonder if anyone else with a 2021 4Runner is experiencing this.

Thanks for the primer on the 5th Gen. I've changed my own oil since the 70's and on all my Toyota 4X4's since my 1980 4X4 Pickup. Glad to see the OF canister set-up is the same as my 2016 RAV4 XLE AWD, I know that procedure. I took advantage of the dealer's 'free' (included with purchase cost) maintenance service for the 1st two years...now I'm going in on my 2019 TRD Offroad.
