Simple used to be taking it to the dealer. I got 4 years of free oil changes when I bought my 2016.
So I took it to the dealer for my lifetime free annual state inspection and got an oil change prior to leaving for the beach. Picked it up and drove 10 miles back home.
One bolt was gone and the other one fell off when I touched it. The service writer and the service manager were like, "Jeez, just when you think you've seen it all."

Funny, but I saw that on another 4Runner at a stop sign while walking my dog. Tried to tell the Lady driving it but she sped off thinking maybe I was going to car-jack her or something. I know I have a face for radio but didn't think I looked that scary.

Yep, I always do the filter change that way. Not really that messy doing it like that.
Torque for the drain valve plate is ~ half of the canister torque. Your’s is just over torqued.
10 ft-lbs for drain valve
18 ft-lbs for housing.

drain valve o-ring needs regular replacing too, so I use it.
Well I just tried it without using the drain tap for the filter and think I will use it next time. Got oil everywhere. Maybe saved me 10min.

I think I am going to avoid ever having the dealer change the oil. They seem to always damage something while they are in there.

Good decision. I didn’t use my “free” oil changes, because everything has a cost.
Dealership (and probably most shops) use the lowest experience techs for oil changes and other “simple” jobs. They also pay per job, not per time it actually takes you to do it, so the tech is incentivized to do it fast. Quantity > Quality is the opposite of my Modus Operandum.

Yeah, that’s what happens when you go to Toyota for a free oil change. I stopped using them. Worried about them messing up anything else.

Now, I'm no newbie to oil changes. I've done it for many years on many different cars with no issues. Done quite a bit of work under the hood on Hondas, Mitsubishis & BMWs. That said...it is a pain.
The first problem was totally my fault and partly Toyotas. Why can't Toyota include a drian plug washer in their oil filter box? WHY? So, months ago, I ordered a bag of washers and stashed them away in a drawer. Yesterday???
NOWHERE to be found. I found it (of course) in the drawer I put it in...That was a 30 minute detour of my plans. And now I've just overturned the rest of my garage looking for a washer. WHATS GOING ON TOYOTA?
Next, I *tried* to do the oil change without lifting the truck. BIG MISTAKE! I'm pretty slim, but I could barely get my head to fit under the rear skid plate.
Anyways, the rest of the oild change went without too much drama. The weird oil filter design and oil filter housing drain thingy didn't pose any problem. The oil filter was on TIGHT though.
Trying to pour the oil from the drain pan into my oil jug was a major pain as it rivalled the Exxon Valdez in 1989. It was a new oil pan to me and very poorly designed.
PSA: The plastic skid plate bolts are made of peanut brittle so go easy on them. I snapped one of mine off.
All in all, why is a 'finicky' German car (2004 BMW ZHP) so much easier to do oil changes on? I don't even have to crawl under the car as the filter is up top and I use a fluid extractor.
