Oil change question

I use AMSOIL oil and fluids in my vehicles. For the oil filter I use OEM and I change it every 5K. I do it myself. Otherwise I know some of the oil change places will allow you to bring in your own oil and they will change it out for you for $10.

I always thought it should be every 3K miles?.....Is it different for 4Runners?

I only need to drive 14 miles a day to get to work, 336 a month (yeah I live very close), I'll probably save a lot in oil changes and gas!

Where could I get the OEM filters? Online or local distributor?

You could purchase them online or at your local dealership. I would try you're local dealership since they might might give you a discount for buying oil filters in bulk.

If you use a decent filter with decent oil you should be able to go 5k or 6 months. I wouldn't go any longer than those two. Some people buy the OEM filters in bulk on Ebay to get a discount. My Toyota dealer isn't much more than online so I just go buy them locally. I get 2 or 3 at a time.

Along with the oil change you will needed it to be lubed. I would think the dealer is more likely to do that.

I know of no manufacturer that recommends a 3k oil change interval. Haven't seen a 3k mile oil change recommendation in over 15 years.

Most manufacturers are 5 years or more. Some say to strictly use the oil monitor system which uses some type of algorithm based on mileage and type of driving.

The Toyota has a oil change indicator which is based on 5k miles. Every 5k miles the oil maintenance light comes on.

Most synthetic motor oils have extended drain intervals. AMSOIL has a 15k or one year drain interval on the 4 Runner unless your engine is modified, then it'll be less. This may also interest you regarding the Toyota Oil Filter:

That is not the Toyota filter that is used on the 4R. The Taiwanese YZZD3 is used on the 4R for dealer oil changes.

The 9005-2004 Japanese Denso filter can be purchased online and from a dealer in NM and is arguably the best filter on the market.

I use the local dealer's coupon @ 24.95. It's been that way for the last 5 years. If they ever take that coupon down, I'll be doing it myself.
