Oil everywhere above front skid, where’s the leak from?

I took off the front skid (to access the starter.. another story) and notice oil everywhere. The dipstick shows full oil so don’t think it’s been leaking also there was no engine light. Where could this be from? Could it be front differential oil? Or just a loose screw or oil cap.

It is nothing to worry about IMO. dip stick is always full. It is a 15-year-old car.

Do you take the plate off for oil changes? If not the oil filter can make a real mess on skidplate

If your front diff was leaking, you would only notice oil around the diff and possibly the CVs and steering rack. In no way could it "splatter" upwards and all over the engine
You're aware this is the 3rd gen section, right? I ask because I notice you're a 5th gen owner, so I feel like typical 5VZ oil leak advice won't be of much use to you

Timing cover inspection plate. power steering pump fitting gasket etc lots of leak related threads in the 5th gen section.

While the skid panels are off take it to a car wash that allows engine cleaning. Take a creeper and look at what you want to clean while your there. When you start pressure washing have eye protection. Things not to do is don't hit the alternator, exhaust system with a lot of water or the radiator everything else is pretty much fair game. I start from under the vehicle then move to the top. After you time stops let it drip a while and see what areas need more attention. After you clean it you can drive it then take a light and see where the leak is coming from.op2:

I'd get under it and see if you can track the leak. Look at the oil filter. It could be leaking from the filter manifold. There is an o ring that seals the manifold that sometimes goes bad.

Always good to know where its coming from.

In the rust belt. I call those rust inhibiting leaks. As long as they arent major leaks the oil keeps my engine bay from rusting out. .

HG jobs are expensive and no guarantee. I like BD too, but never tried it.

I have 2005 4runner with 150,000 miles. I get two drips a week. I just watch it. In a 15 year old car that starts and runs like new, I don't complain.

I change my own oil every 5000 miles.

I bought my daughter a new Camry when she graduated from HS and got accepted to FSU. She's now driving to work in that car for a major broker so it was the best thing she could own as there is no way they would hire her without a "drive".

That's the Toyota dealer's happy salesman.

HG jobs are expensive and no guarantee. I like BD too, but never tried it.

#1, the blue devil hes talking about is the rear main sealer... not head gasket sealer...

#2... thought you said you dont get any leaks now with your conventional 10/40 & blamed your leaks on super slick synthetic?? youre really digging a hole for yourself captainkilmer!

#3, are you that bored you seek out threads in the 3rd gen section? along with reviving 5 year old threads?

I have always wondered why Captsolo is always posting his repairs and part numbers for a 4th gen in numerous 3rd gen sections. Your 4th gen starter, fuel pump, injectors, oil filter, etc do not work on 3rd gen 4Runners. Never made any sense to me...

There's a black light dye you can buy on Amazon for cheap and then get a simple black light flashlight. Put it in the oil, drive it around and check the engine bay periodically until you see it glow. The old oil won't glow since it didn't have the dye in it, only the fresh leak. Easiest way to find it with 100% certainty.
