Oil leak!!

After reading your statements I actually feel dumber. I'm going to go crack my drain plug so it will leak a little. Don't want to be left out since I don't leak anything.

Congradulations you just made the ignore list.

Then again, if you plan on going anywhere like work, for instance, don't worry about the leaks.

I'm the last one to ever throw an insult, but WOW you really are an idiot. Proud to say my engine doesn't leak with 242,000 miles and I do drive it to work, and long distance, and offroad. If it did leak I would fix it ASAP!

First of all, resorting to personal insults really does not attract intelligent readers.

No, but apparently it attracts you.

Second, your 18 year old engine will leak oil if it has seen any use.

His engine isn't 18 years old.

There's a practical side to using it for it's expressed purpose i.e. going somewhere and doing that within reasonable parameters. Most of the bigshot grease monkeys here couldn't make it across state boarders let alone coast to coast. They've never gone anywhere and couldn't do it if they actually tried.

I agree, expecting your truck not to catch on fire is entirely unreasonable.

Then again, if you plan on going anywhere like work, for instance, don't worry about the leaks.

Sure, because we all have to choose every day between making it to work on time or not arriving in a twisted flaming pile of wreckage. Tough call, I know.

I really love how this horses ass is trying to give SV engine advice, too.

Just shut up about your leaky motor, SV, stop being such a baby. Wear some Nomex when you drive to work and you'll be fine.

He has a valid point. I think Nate is up to something too... Maybe we all should loosen our oil pan bolts or drain plugs. Do this on the engine, transmission, differentials, etc. No need to have any oil in our 18 year old bucket of bolts. Why spend any time in the garage maintaining our vehicles. We might as well just drive our bucket of bolts to and from work every day so we can replace our seized engines and transmissions because we ran them dry. Maybe we should burn our vehicles at the gas stations and laugh when the attendant trips on his way out with a fire extinguisher. It's only a fire at a gas station, it's not like gas is flammable or anything.

:flamewar:

Back on topic: I don't see any signs of oil leaks as of yet. I did notice that my oil pressure was a little higher too. I'm sure that has something to do with the engine as a whole being sealed a lot better without a dry rotted o-ring allowing for a leak.

So... I replaced the o-ring on my distributor and I'm still leaking. I went and bought the $7 o-ring from the stealership just to be 100% sure that is not where it's coming from. The more and more I look at it I wonder if my power steering pump is what's leaking. Eventually I'll end up with a ram assist for my steering so I'm thinking about this:

Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts

At the rate your going, you will have replaced every seal, grommet and gasket :)

That engine will be locked up tighter than fort knox!

STP Stop Leak

The two bottles of STP Stop Leak which I added to the oil has helped. I notice an obvious slowing of the leaks. It is still dripping so today I may crawl under the vehicle and wash it off again. Nevertheless, the dip stick shows a full engine and has been giving a steady reading.

Thanks for the advise but I would rather just fix the problem instead of using a band-aid.

I am having a heck of a time finding out where my oil is going. What gets me is at the rate that I'm losing oil at, it should be an obvious leak if it's an external issue, if it was internal than I should be getting a LOT of smoke out of my exhaust and poor performance with the mixture of oil in the cylinders. Can someone confirm this?? If I'm burning oil, smoke will come out of the exhaust... right?

I'm not sure if I'm leaking motor oil or if I'm burning it in the pistons. I have good compression on all 4 cylinders so I don't think I'm losing any through the rings. I will replace my PCV valve and eliminate that as a possible issue. It's a $4 part so that's a no brainer. I pulled my valve cover this morning and re did the rtv around the half moon rubber dealies to eliminate that as well. I have a new seal on EVERY part of this engine now. I don't see any visible leaks coming from the engine or anything around it. I am leaking at the power steering pump though, I can see the upper line that goes to the reservoir is leaking on the fitting at the power steering pump. I could just replace that line itself but I would rather replace and upgrade the steering system.

And to make things better my 4runner is now pulling slightly to the left. I replaced one tie rod end and I have another bad tie rod end and a bad idler arm. I love wheeling and beating my 4runner up but this whole IFS thing does NOT like it! I need to get off my arse and do my $A$!!!

Is your idler arm underneath your PS pump? I can't recall on the 22RE. If is, it hasn't gotten fluid in there and destroyed the pin and the bearings has it?

As for the oil, has FoG followed behind you to make sure you are not blowing a little smoke out that you are just not seeing? Your consumption issue is weird as I know you have already checked your coolant. Clean coolant, no puddles or grimy areas on the engine could only mean consumption right?. Even if it was not leaking while static but leaking in a dynamic state you would see some evidence of the spray I would think. That just feels like consumption to me. Good thing on my 3.0 is I can see all the leaks.

The idler arm is on the passenger side of the runner and there isn't any evidence of fluid anywhere near though. Thanks for the idea though. I'm pretty sure the steering parts are getting junked out because of the stress I put on them while wheeling. The stock IFS stuff isn't very strong, especially when 35" tires are added to them.

As for the leak, I can see a LOT of junk around the gear box and obvious leakage coming from that. I knew that was leaking but it has always been a slow leak so I haven't bothered to fix that until I can rebuild it or buy a new one that has been tapped for the hydro assist conversion. From what I can tell, I am not blowing any smoke from the exhaust. FoG has followed me before and hasn't said anything about it smoking and he's pretty good about seeing stuff like that and noticing out of the ordinary stuff on his rig.

This is irritating!! I have put about 3.5 quarts in my engine in the last month. Going through this much oil would be noticeable somewhere!!! If I was burning that much oil in the last 2000 miles (if that) I would definitely see and smell that smoke... I would think so at least. If I was leaking that much, there should be some sort of oily mess on the engine or engine compartment somewhere. I degreased and cleaned the engine about a month ago and the engine is pretty much spotless. It's definitely not mixing with the coolant or my engine would have gone kaboom by now.

Yeah my PS pump is on the pass side right above my idler arm and I have had that experience already. I couldn't remember where the PS pump is on the 22RE as the only one I have worked on had the TG PS pump you are thinking about upgrading to. It was set up on the driver side with a modified bracket but it was probably in the stock location. I just wasn't for sure.

Yeah your oil deal is weird. I don't know what to think. I just reached out to the smartest guy I know to see if he has any ideas for you though.

I do know that I need to drive it a little more. I replaced the distributor o-ring with an OEM one a couple days ago. I haven't put enough miles on it to see if I'm still losing oil. Maybe at this time I'm getting annoyed for no good reason and am thinking too much into it. I dunno what to think either. I just read a few articles about engines burning oil and the symptoms of it. A few symptoms are lack of power, blueish smoke from exhaust and clouds of smoke from the exhaust during startup and acceleration. I definitely don't have a lack of power as my little 4 banger is putting out quite a bit of punch for what it is. My engine smokes a little bit of white in the morning but after the condensation is burnt off, the smoke stops and doesn't smoke anymore.

If I was burning oil, would oil evidence be obvious on the o2 sensor and easy to identify between carbon buildup and oil deposits?

A couple thoughts. My OLD engine goes through about a quart of oil every month and a half. I never see smoke despite the fact that I know I am burning some oil. Not sure that smoking exhaust is an obvious sign of burning oil.

I have never noticed smoke out your exhaust, but then again, you are usually in my rear view mirror.

Is it possible that it only leaks while you are moving? Just spitting out thoughts.

I would imagine that if oil only leaked while driving, I would have some oily smear down the side, bottom or back of the engine that would continue down or near the tranny.

:redbrick:

I wonder if there's some troll that is siphoning oil out of my engine when I'm not looking...
