oil pan gasket and pinion seaL

MY OLD LADY GOT A 95 SR5 4 RUNNER FROM HER WORK. IN THE INSPECTION THING IT SAID IT HAD A LEAKY OIL PAN GASKET AND A BAD FRONT PINION SEAL. HOW SERIOUS ARE THESE PROMLEMS?

Doesnt sound like anything major, unless they are remnants of some other major work that was done poorly previously. Might want to crawl under there and see if it looks like the engine has been pulled or been partly taken apart at somepoint.

How many miles?? What engine? 2WD or 4WD?

You will need to locate the leak by cleaning the area and finding the leak. If the leak is indeed the oil pan, you could try to torque the pan bolts to spec, to see if the leak stops. If not you will need to pull the pan and replace the gasket (could be major surgery). The front pinion seal should be able to be replaced without to much fuss.

It's the seal for the input shaft going into the diff. It prevents gear oil from leaking out. It's the shaft that is driven by the drive/propeller shaft.

The best way to seal an oil pan gasket, is that you have to remove it, clean off the old gasket and seals, straighten out any distorted bolt holes on the oil pan, and reinstall the pan gasket and seals.
Do use an RTV silicone sealer when doing this.

The oil pan gasket isnt a big issue. It's the pinion gasket that can lead to alot of money. My advise, if you've never torn into a diff don't start on this one. I'm a auto tech by trade and we see jobs that started out at $200 and made it to a grand if not done right. I can explain the issues with that are...
