Oil Type....opening a can of worms....

Can't believe I'm responding to an oil thread. :fish:
Been using T6 5W40 in all my bikes and vehicles for years. Two stroke crankcases, four stroke sumps, 500hp 1jz, my old powerstroke, misc other cars and the last 50k of my 4runner. In the T4R, I change it every 5k.
I'm not sure if it's the best, but it works well in a lot of different applications, is inexpensive and easy to get. Good enough for me.

Wow, that sounds exactly like the previous owner of my new to me third gen. He used the same T6 with the same interval change and has never had any problems with it even in his race bikes.
I plan to continue using it as well.

This. Filters I'm picky about, but oil is oil. I run whatever's on sale.

Or is all oil really different? Will it really make the difference on my engine to last 400k mi? (Insert:fear, paranoia, illogical thoughts about an argument as old as oil itself, spend money on more oil changes while using the best synthetics)
I went to the Honda outboard school at MMI and the instructor claimed he never changes his oil in his old creeper van. Just changes the filter and adds oil to top it off. I wouldn't assume he uses synthetic...
I hate doing oil changes and I'm probably going to use amsoil so I only have to do it once a year. I'm lazy, well, I have young kids.

If you read the thread I posted at the very beginning, making the claim that "oil is oil" isn't really logical. The research the individual did indicates there is quite a difference between different types of oil.

If the conclusion of your article is all you care about, why post this thread? You asked if there was any reason to run Rotella specifically, and you're getting answers. If some of those answers aren't what you wanted to hear, don't ask the question next time.

I guess I made poor assumptions and had false expectations. I was hoping others would read the article and have input about using or not using Rotella and the merits for or against in a gas motor since the article is written for motorcycle motors. I did not intend to start a "what type of oil do you use?" thread, or I would have ask what type of oil you use.

I know oil is Not oil. My post was supposed to be riddled with sarcasm, which I can't type. Hence why I made one statement, then a different one, then one contrary to what normal people do or believe, then my own opinion.

People still change their oil every 3k? That was recommend for oil in 1965. Shit I change my twin turbo S4 oil every 5500. A non boosted 4Runner I change every 7500.

I do mine every 6 months or 3k because I live out in the desert where the outside temp is 120 for a good bit of the summer. I know the oil is good but I can't account for the heat breakdown.
Thank goodness I'm going back east soon. Back to 5k or so.
On the article I have never heard of it but if the specs are good I could give it a whirl. Interesting idea.
Curious what kind of difference you've noticed? I run M1 10W30 in my 740 right now.
For the runner it just gets mobil super "high mileage" 5W30. Never had any issues. IMO frequent changes are key, I change every 5000 kms.
Oil is cheap! Engines are expensive! New oil is always better than old oil no matter how much technology has progressed over the years.

You can use 5W-40 and shouldn't see any issues. I usually recommend just sticking with a 5W-30 like Toyota recommends. If you're in a climate that never sees freezing conditions, a 10W-30 will work also. As long as your coolant system is up to par, it will keep your 4Runner at proper operating temp and 40 is not necessary, 30 will do just fine. I run Amsoil 5W-30 in mine at 15K/1 year OCI's.
