OK to "air-down" & drive on asphalt?

For what it's worth, this random guy on the internet thinks the basket-racks sitting way up on top of the OEM racks look silly. Get a real rack. Or only wear the rack when needed; in addition to being able to fit in your garage, you'll get better gas mileage.

Air down or rack off

For the occasional parking problem in the low garage you would be well off to remove the Yakima Rack. Most of these basket racks sit pretty high when mounted on top of the OEM roof rack cross bars. Just take it off and only put it on top when you need it. You'll get better mileage with less wind noise and always be able to enter parking garages.

A good alternative if you have $1000 to $1500 to spend is to replace the tall basket rack on top of the OEM roof rails with a Baja Rack or Gobi rack that is bolted directly to the roof. The BajaRack Utility Rack is the lowest profile rack I've seen. Camelback or Drabbits also makes a low profile rack but his wait time on production backlog is around 8 months right now.

Whenever you air down for off roading you should carry a portable compressor to refill the tires before hitting the pavement. Handling on low tires will be really squirrely.
