I recently picked this up from a black Friday sale for $250.

It's JBL's new Apple/Android car play radio. I loved the minimalist look of it, but to be honest, it's been a bit buggy since the install. I've contacted Crutchfield and they told me that JBL is still building the architecture that pushes out software updates. WTF?!

I want to say the software update has gone through because it has been working flawlessly for the past few weeks.

I decided to try my hand at making a set of low profile mounts for my Rola basket. I hated the way it sat on my old factory crossbars. I used two pieces of 1.25" angle aluminum that I bolted together using flange bolts and nuts. I then drilled holes in the top piece so that I could use the left over Rola mounting hardware, then bolted it to the factory rails. I painted everything black, then glued on strips of rubber that I made out of a piece of rubber flooring that I found at Home Depot. I think it came out pretty, pretteeyyy, prettteeeeyyyy, pretty good...

I briefly tested it by hanging off of it and trying to bounce it around and it seemed pretty solid, didn't show any signs of flex. If anyone has seen this sort of setup fail, please let me know because I plan on putting a bit of weight up there in the summer.

Also in effort to continuously modernize a 20 year old vehicle, I picked up a set of LED tail lights as well as replaced my 3rd brake lights and front corner lights with LED bulbs.

And just curious, are you a member of any offroad or Toyota clubs? I know there are a bunch of Jeep specific clubs in MA and RI, but I'm wondering if anyone has love for the Toys.

I've joined a few facebook groups; New England Overland, Exploring NH, and a friend of mine started a group called NE-OVEX, which is a group dedicated to multi-day, point A-B overland trips in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. A lot of the groups around here are mainly jeep people who are only interested in day trips, rock bashing, or mudding. There's definitely a shortage of Toyota specific groups around here.

It's not a Toyota specific group, but I did sign up for the Vermont Overland Rally this year. I know that there are a lot of 4runners, FJ Cruisers and Land Cruiser that have attended past events, so hopefully I'll meet a few new peeps there.

Honestly, I've never really cared for vehicle specific groups, but more for just common interests of overlanding, off-grid living, well built machines and legit exploration. Though It would be nice to meet a few 3rd gen owners around here for part swapping and knowledge sharing.

What made you decide to get a winch?

I wasn't going to add a winch initially because I rarely get myself in situations to where I would ever need one, mainly nothing crazier than a class 6 road. But I'm wanting to do more remote, long distance trips this year and it just seems like a safe bet to have one if I ever need it. I was told once nobody buys a winch with the intent to use it often, more so a last resort if your driving skills have failed you.

Honestly those types of groups sound like more fun that just the rock crawling day trips. That stuff is fun, but that's not the type of rig I want to build. I'm more interested in the "overlanding" type stuff, especially up north where I can bring my mountainbike. Over the past few years I've been doing more riding up north and VT is now my happy place.

I like seeing different rigs too, and think the common interest should trump just driving the same type of vehicle. Though, I imagine if you're in a group where everyone has a similar vehicle, if you break chances are someone has the right spare part and knows how to help you fix it. I used to wheel with Jeep guys when I had a ZJ, and those guys are awesome.

If I end up finding one, I'll hit you up and join your friend's group.

Definitely look into Vermont Overland https://www.vermontoverland.com/4x4/, they plan trips all the time, usually small groups. And https://www.newenglandovex.com/checkout then. I plan on being more involved in those groups this year now that I have my rig setup the way I want.

I did a little bit of work since my last post.

I installed my LED tail lights, installed my new Superwinch TS9500 winch, and found a spot for my Overland Bound member badge.

A few things to come in the following weeks; PCV valve replacement, new thermostat, and Savage rock sliders.

Don't be dumb like me and drop your old PCV grommet into your valve cover... What was supposed to be a quick 10 min job to do on my lunch break ended up being about a 2 hour job after the brittle grommet broke into about 6 little pieces, all falling into my valve cover. Fun times!

On a brighter note, I think replacing the PCV valve fixed the subtle rough idle I've been having.

Ouch.. yeah that sucks. Bummer.

When I noticed mine starting to crack when pulling it out, I tucked a paper towel sort of piece through the hole to catch all the pieces. Pulled all the big chunks out, then slowly pulled the towel back out (while it pulled all the small pieces out with it). :yo: Seemed to work decently..

Good to hear the PCV fixed the rough idle. I was hoping mine would - but to no avail. Still chasing that illusive rough idle.
That all aside; nice lookin rig you have here though.
