OME 880 vs 881 and 906 vs 890

Alright, so after HOURS of searching, reading and contemplating, I still am not sure what combo of OME springs and shocks I should "spring" for. (No Pun intended).

Background: 4Runner is a 99 Limited with tall springs. Running 265/75/16 Goodyear Duratracs. I'm sitting just shy of 35.5" right now. My current springs are pretty old and tired.

The bad: I blew one of my original shocks in the rear last week. Rig has 140,000 miles on it. Time to upgrade.

The requirements: Minimal lift. I don't want my tires (which are new) to look small by lifting too high. I would also like to avoid a diff drop, or new panhard bar etc.

I am dizzy looking at options. I have a wife and two kids as well, so I don't want to go too big. Here are some pics of my setup now. If I could gain 1.5-2.25" that would be IDEAL. Anything closer to 3" is too much IMO.

Any advice / suggestions etc. are MORE than welcome at this point. :cowboy:

Pics of the rig right now:

I'll give you two opinions.

First, when my 96 limited was stock on 265/70/16s it rode at the same height. Not really an opinion I guess! :)

Second, get adjustable fronts and throw wildly at the rear. 906, 890. Doesn't matter, you can always adjust the front to match, then if you wantto change it in the future you're only out one set of rear springs.

In the end, your ride will look fine either way.

Good luck

If you want a 2" lift, go with 906s/880s.
890s/881s will give you a 3"/2.5" lift.
890s/881s + top spacer will give you 3" all the way around.

Hey Brian... what are you thoughts on a 881/906 combo? I've seen pics that suggest that is pretty dead set level (unloaded). The only thing I really want to ensure is that I don't end up with a reverse rake unloaded.

If that is marginal, I am leaning towards 881/890, and hope that my 265/75/16 Duratracs are up to the task of making it look decent still.

Can you make a blanket statement that say 906's will give 2" of lift without taking into consideration the particular 4Runner?

If you put 906's on a 02 and also on a tall 99 I thought the amount of lift would be different. Let's say the 02 goes up 2"...but since the 99 started an inch higher, due to tall coils, it really only goes up 1"...ultimately they both end up at the same height. Or is there something else in play here?

Yes, regardless of the year (96-02)..If you have a 99 4runner and replace the coils with 906 then the lift achieved will only be 1" than the advertised 2", because of it's already 1" taller springs like you mentioned. If say you have a 2002, then 906 in comparison with it's original coils will be 2" difference in height achieved...

If we started on a clean flat form and put 906 on all years, then you'll see there's no mystery in play and 99 4runner won't be any different than the rest.

I have ther 906/880s and the OME shocks but it was installed by the previous owner. The truck sat about dead level with no rake when I first got it, which I didn't like, because I haul my friends around alot, and I hate the way a truck looks when it sags so I put 1" spacer in the back and now I love the stance. Looks more aggressive IMO and when loaded, doesn't sag.

Provided that the 881 and 906 will give you a leveled stance unloaded per say...what happens if you load you cargo? 906' to start with is already 1/2" lower than 881's advertised, and once settled may go down abit more.

You don't want your truck to look like my neighbors Explorer, I don't think.

I agree with KeatonMP..nice truck too, man! anyway just to re-iterate more on lifts and stance, here's a comment made by quicksilvr on my build and his take on that issue, he said.....a little rake looks aggressive, and when it's loaded it doesn't sag. For me, the bottom line is: if the rear end is saggy or even slightly lower EVER, it makes the truck looks old and neglected.

Oh man does this ever ever remind me of my neighbors explorer.

i have 881+topplatespace/890s and love them. I swear its closer to 2- 2.5 inches now. I dont have a level pic or measurements but i have same size duratracs and everything is great.

From what I know, 880/906s will sit more level than 906/881s. You may wind up with a little reverse rake with 906/881s and definitely if you are carrying weight in the back.

The 265/75 Duratracs will look great with a ~2" lift.

Well that's the case with every lift discussion on any car/truck forum on the internet. I'm not the only one estimating the amount of lift a set of springs will give. Lift manufacturers have to estimate too because they can't possibly be precise on the amount of lift that will be achieved on every potential customer's vehicle out there. So they have to take an average and estimate it as a 2" or 3" lift or whatever.

That is a good point too. I would prefer a little rake vs. dead level unloaded with the thought that after time it will likely setlle/sag a bit AND if I put any kind of gear in it, it will be a reverse rake.

Now leaning towards 881/890 combo.... just nervous that (3") in the rear will be a bit much. Keep in mind I am only sitting 35.5" from ground on all corners now... so obviously my 99 coils have sagged. BTW, that is with brand new 265/75/16 Duratracs.

The lift from the 890 coils is definitively not too much lift for 265/75-16.
I have more lift than that and I'm running 265/75-16. It will sit a little higher when the coils are new but they will settle a little.

I just installed the OME Complete Suspension for my 02 4Runner last week.

I wanted to keep a stock look and tires but replace the factory original suspension after 182K. The vehicle is used by my two daughters for transportation to and from high school. So, no rock crawling and four wheeling, just a daily driver. I call TOYTEC and they stated that 880s Fronts, no spacers, OME 906 Coils Rear, Rear shocks of 60028 Comfort ride no weight. This would give me a little lift, which was ok because I didn’t know how bad the OEM Suspension had, sank and dropped after 182K. I was told that it would be good to get the 4135 Firestone Airbags for the rear running five ounds of air. The bags I was told would eliminate the rear sag from added weight from hauling and towing. I didn’t have to do a diff drop, or panhard bar extension either.

I’m running 265/70 R16s. All four corners are at 36 inches from the ground dead center of the wheel to the bottom of the wheel well. There is a gap of seven inches from the bottom of the wheel well to the top of the tire. Rides like a champ now.

OP, I'm installing the OME 881/890 (without top-plate spacers) this weekend. Seems like we have similar tastes as I wanted marginal lift and wanted my new 265/75 BFG KM2's to NOT look miniature. I prefer rake over level, especially knowing that when I load it up to go wheeling it will sink in the a$$. I'll post some before/after pics when the lift is done on Sunday!

That would be killer man. LOL, I just took two jacks, and positioned them under my Runner front and back. I put the rear at 38 1/4 and the front at 37 even just to see how it looked. I liked it a lot. ;-) I am super stoked to see your before and after man.... if I am right, my guess if your measurements will be damn close to what I just did with my jacks.

haha yah, Im super excited too!! I'll keep you posted...

I went through the same confusion as well. At first I was going to do a 3" lift with a 1" body lift and some 285's. I soon realized that would be too much for me and the 285's would kill me with mpg's and power. So I thought 881/906, but had heard about the sagging. I probably would have gone with the 881/906 and put a trim packer in the back if it wasn't enough height. I ended up with tundra struts (2") and downey coils (2.5-2.75") and 265's. I plan on putting the lift on next month.

the tires won't make a dif, do you put anything in the back of your ride? if so, go with 881/890, the rear may be a smidge higher when unloaded but when you put 2 dogs in there it will support the weight (I have a great pyrenese and lab), let alone if you go camping you will be glad to have the extra support. if you want to buy some 882's I'll give you my 881's!!
