On my way to an interview in my daily driver,......ball joint failure

If you haven't yet filed an insurance claim DO IT NOW.

Most comprehensive policies cover this as long as you are on a legit road. I have heard of several folks here on T4R getting paid out $$$$$$ to repair a ball joint failure via their auto-insurance policy.

Do not assume you will be screwed, there could be a large payout.

:plane:
But all I have is a basic bare minimum policy from AAA.

Moog is fine for everything but the LBJ. You'll want to buy OEM and do that again soon. They only last 20k-30k (often much less) vs the 100k+ of OEM.

They'll do fine in a pinch to get you back on the road, but I would not consider it long term.

Agreed, please reconsider OEM at the least for your LBJs.

Ouch, glad you came out okay.

Like most others are saying, there could be more we're not seeing, but overall seems like you're not too terrible.

LBJ - Go OEM
UCA - I have no opinion on OEM vs Aftermarket
CV - Rebuild or go OEM
Tie Rod Ends - Aftermarket

I just did my LBJ (do both sides!) and followed the guide here followed the guide here. Overall not a terrible job, except that my tie rod ends wouldn't break for shit. Autozone loan-a-tool 27276 helped with the TRE, and 27016 helped for the LBJ.

I'll have to disagree. You don't need to go oem For cv axles. OEM CV AXLES ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!!! I've been run autozone cv axles for over 3-4 years. And I beat the shit out do my truck in the woods. No issues. If your lifted. And you offroad. Before you install your new cv axles. Reboot them with all pro off road extended cv boots. And you'll be good.

I've used GSP CV's Lifetime warnt from Advance Auto since 06. They have performed as good as OEM. The A/P boots are worth it for sure.

Agree 110%.
See Alexman (arlindsay on Yotatech) Videos testimony on youtube.

Still no feedback from owners IF FSM, user's manual or Tech Bulletin recommends replacement frequency because some LBJ's fail without signs of impending failure?

seriously, non OEM LBJ's
well at least you will get practice replacing them

???? You can't be f#@(*%g serious!
You saw what started this thread?!
Have you experienced this?!

Update, had to find a local shop that would press out UBJ from spindle assy. Getting that done this morning, interesting the negative feed back regarding moog BJ, I have used them before on a 1990 camaro and a 89 Camaro, never had issues with them, the only reason I can come up with is you guys are off road enthusiast and there for really put these ball joints under stress, as in this application is might see gravel road once or twice but that would be the extent of off road. I have a feeling they should be fine.

***flame suit on??

I’m going to trust my brother on this point. From casual inspection the MOOG LBJ seems robust and we'll built, but I really don't know what I looking for in this regard. But my my 4runner is only going to see the harsh reality of LA's deteriorating infrastructure not Mother Nature's giving embrace.

I'm gonna be a little harsh here. Do you really think your Brother knows more than us? People that are here every day & are addicted to their 4runners????
You already made one big mistake by not changing your old OEM LBJ's. It could have cost you or your passengers your lives on the highway or mountain curve! (and being a member since 2012????) A POS early 90's American car is not a built in Japan precision instrument. These LBJ's have tension on them not compression like other BJ's. Moog ball joints fail, will it be 1000 miles or 10K?? Who knows?? Have fun playing Russian Roulette.

Flame wars & trolling is not allowed on this site except for the occasional joking around/ball busting between friends. That's why this site has so much traffic. We share knowledge & experience. I'll have my '99 18 years on Jan 6th. These ball joints are under stress all the time because of the design. Only OEM can handle it. Do a Google search, 95% of LBJ failures have been on road. Most off road rigs change their original LBJ's to new OEM before going off road. I'm not going to argue with you, take our advise or leave it.
If I bough a used 4runner with Moog LBJ's I wouldn't even drive it until they were changed out.

I have to be honest here, I stopped reading after "pos Camaro, jap precision" but here's game plan, at oil change intervals we will check LBJ's for excessive play and or premature wear, if any signs are found I will change to OEM. Just to be clear, we did not go with OEM because of a cost issue, it was a time issue, I need to get this Japanese precision built vehicle out of my garage Asap. I have a pos 2018 Mustang gt waiting out in the cold :)

Depends on the procedure you use. To find true condition of LBJ use FSM
procedure. If you see movement with the pry bar under tire method
your so close to crash n burn time it just isn't worth it.

To recap:
The general consensus on this forum, after seeing dozens and dozens of failed aftermarket LBJs is that
using Moog LBJs is a really bad idea.
It takes an one extra day to get the OEM ones from an L.A. area dealer: Order by 5pm, in tomorrow at 9am.
Good luck...seriously.

If there's an achilles heal on our rigs, it is absolutely the LBJ's. Just to re-emphasize what everyone on here has already said = ONLY go with OEM, and replace the four bolts. The damage done, if you're lucky, with a failed aftermarket LBJ, far exceeds the cost of OEM LBJ's.

Sheesh after reading the rest of this post maybe I hope to not break a LBJ. But maybe I’ll go get a pair of oem ball joints in order and keep the Napa brand I bought as trail spares.
