Few years back, there was a bad hail storm in South Texas. Thousands of vehicles totaled and homes and businesses FUBARed within a 5 mile radius. I'm just waiting on the next big hail storm to total mine so I can buy it back and fix the windows and lights. I won't mind driving around a paid off golf ball.

That is Awesome. I almost pissed myself. I would tell people it is a sleeping bag for my rig. Use it for my build tell people my rig is morphing into a beautiful overlanding butterfly.

We got a decent size hail storm last week. Been doing this cheap air mattress method for as long as I can remember. Works flawlessly.

Blah blah blah, that’s what insurance is for...working in the collision industry myself, it’s not worth the hassle. As stated above we’ve had a lot of nice vehicles total over hail damage.

Pea sized hail doesn’t damage vehicles. The best thing you can do to protect from hail is to buy a roof rack and perhaps even tbrow some plywood or other solid mat on it for better coverage.

There is hail that you stand no chance against, unless you have your vehicle covered in mattresses all the way around. Larger the hail, the more speed it gathers while falling to the surface. Baseball sized hail is going to damage every surface of the vehicle, including door panels.

Or just make an effort to park under an overhang. I’ll pull into a bank or gas station if a storm with hail is imminent. Or take a drive to a neighbor’s house to park under their deck if I ‘m home.

I once saved my BRAND NEW Bronco from a pretty serious hail storm by grabbing the quilt off the bed and covering it. It survived unscathed.
Prior to me buying it,it was years since I saw hail in FL. Go figure.

I spent many years wondering the same thing while living in West TX.
The "best" solutions varied, but they included:

moving blankets (with all cotton sheets beneath them!) and straps

two layers of cardboard held with duct tape (Red Green would be proud!)

vehicle covers (purpose made) with aforementioned cotton sheets underneath

I have considered making my own out of reflectix, foam mats, and even pvc framed awnings. It's a tough problem to overcome... nature wants to smack us for having nice things, period!

You should be fine without anything. You won't typically encounter large, damaging hail except in the Plains states and along the Front Range. Hail in the Southwest is typically in the mountainous areas, and is usually fairly small.

Not true. We get hail all the time here in West Texas (Midland, Odessa, Abilene). One time we got softball sized hail and it did a lot of damage about 5 years ago. But most of the time it's pea-quarter sized hail.

Agreed. I was including West Texas in the Plains area vs. Southwest in the context of this thread as I believe (didn't read back to the beginning) the OP was talking about the Four Corners states.
