One of the better SUV reviews

So a lot of the car/truck/SUV reviews out there these days are pretty boiler plate and possibly stacked depending on the publication you might find them in.

Being a diesel fan (most of us euro-trash is), I came across a review for the JGC diesel on foxnews.com and had a read. Not a whole lot of surprises there, but there was a reasonably fair assessment of the power/mileage pro's and the cost cons. Unfortunately, while this engine has plenty going for it, you’ll pay plenty to get it. The diesel is a steep $4,500-$5000 premium over the V6, and costs $1,305 more than the V8, but you can recoup the latter at the pump in about a year. Sooner if you take a couple of long road trips.

Let me suggest one.

According to Google Maps, the most direct route between the off-road meccas of Moab, Utah, and California’s Rubicon trail covers 729 miles. The maximum range of the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is 730 miles between fill-ups.

As I said, pack a lunch.

It gave me a chuckle... and a desire to pack a lunch.....

While I'm not calling BS on the author, his recoup statement is a stretch.... possible? still a stretch.

Sounds like he's comparing to the Hemi, assuming over 50,000 HIGHWAY miles per year, and a minimal difference in diesel/gas cost.

Aaaaannnnnnd, here come the diesel fanboys.

you do realize that 730 mile range is probably best scenario on highway flat highway @ 55 probably.

off roading never gets that remotely close in mpg

pack some good hiking shoes/boots with that lunch.

It's funny that he implies that someone buying a JGC would actually take it to Moab or on the Rubicon.

not to offend people that have to deal with "epileptic seizures" but it looks like that jeep is having one.

latest and greatest has its place in certain things, but at least toyota is slow and steady and it shows by issues/volume compare to other brands. i would love to have a 8" or 12" center dash screen, but i rather have tested and reliable and old stuff than sit in a dealer repair shop or side of the road.

i was looking at a durango with all the bells/whistles and i was like "Squirrel" but then once i walk out and come to my senses, i realize, i just want to get in and drive and not have to deal with that crap. too old to deal with it in a daily driver.

now if i had a sports car, i would understand.

edit : i would also like to add, its sad when the warden's 2012 tacoma v6 DCab has a better/softer ride over city bumps than my 2010 4 door subaru legacy sedan.

The mileage to fuel/engine upgrade cost ratio of the diesel will in no way pay itself off in a year! I just don't believe it. Most definitely not on average miles driven of 12-15k per year.

And to think I was actually considering another Grand Cherokee after having owned two of them. (WJs) But my dear wife reminded me of something that I had said a few years earlier.

I had come in the house ranting and raving and using lots of profanity after working on the Jeep, and must have said something like "never let my buy another something profane Jeep again!"

Well she remembered and asked me to look for something else when I started looking for a new work car. I did some research and decided the 4Runner would be a good choice for me.

Thank you wife, the 4Runner has been so far trouble free for 71k miles.

My 02 WJ Overland required $5000 + warranty work in one month at 40,000 miles. My 06 WK 5.7 Ltd need entire new front axles assembly and rear diff rebuilt at 7,000 miles.....

wow these are bad. I've never owned a jeep but how do they keep selling so many of these and toyota can't sell half the numbers? do people not learn or are they just so blind cause of the "jeep" brand? someone explain it to me please?

Probably popularity and "coolness" of the brand in USA and canada. And more bling bling for the $.

I traded my JGC for my 4runner, it's funny I now have 41k on my 4runner and it feels rock solid and like I'm finally breaking it in, no squeaks, no rattles, no complaints. At 40k miles I had already had the jeep to the dealer multiple times for various issues. It was my third Jeep vehicle, the wrangler I had was great, the Cherokee was really good, with each vehicle I could see the decline in quality.

My JGC did really well off-road on moderate trails, I beat it up and never thought about it, but I wasn't very happy with the dealer visits. But I get that some folks buy into the marketing and don't realize what they can do in a 4runner, how many offroading commercials do you see the 4runner in versus the JGC?

I was so happy that I bought an extended warranty for my 04 Overland, I think the warranty was around $2000.00 but it paid well over $6000.00 in repairs before it expired at 100k miles.

Even paid for the exhaust manifold that cracked at 99,840 miles.

Unfortunately that was not the end of my repair expenses, two more front differential rebuilds and many other small issues before I finally gave up at 218k miles and traded it in for the 4runner.

I even had new front half shafts and wheel bearings on order when I found the 4Runner. I had to take a hit on the restocking fee when I returned the parts, but it was worth it. I love my TE.
