One tooth...crankshaft

Just did my tb/wp...i havent pulled the pin on my tensioner yet (which was a PITA).

My only concern is when both of my timing marks are lined up my crankshaft mark is off a tooth to the right.

What should i do? Take it off and reset it? not worry about it?

Gotta redo it until everything lines up. Make sure to do 2 CS revolutions before pulling the pin.
 
Gotcha. Will do.

It was weird because it was all lined up until i started tightening up the tensioner, once i did that is when it all went out of whack.

Yep, know exactly what your talking about. Try lining up the crankshaft a little behind (or ahead - can't remember) to compensate for the one tooth off
 
Had the same thing happen when I was setting timing. I had to compensate then pull the in to get everything right on

Yeah, mine was off one tooth on the crank and I went through the same decision making. I pulled it off and fought it on again. Glad I did.
 
The easiest way to put a new timing belt on and get it right every time is to:

1) remove top idler pulley
2) start with crankshaft and then wrap the belt around both cams (using timing belt marks)
2a) with your right hand, take the timing belt and put on water pump then left cam lining up the marks
2b) with your left hand, take the timing belt and put on tensioner pulley, then right cam lining up the marks
2c) you may need to turn the left cam 1/2 tooth clockwise, and the right cam 1/2 tooth counter clockwise to get the timing belt on. If you do, once you get the timing marks lined up, turn the cams back toward the center of the engine in preparation for step 3.
3) put the top idler pulley in, torque to spec

You can use zip ties to keep the belt on the cams instead of those paper clips.

This is the method used by lots of Toyota techs. There is just such a tight tolerance in the timing belt, doing it per FSM is really hard.

I just used this method on a 1MZ engine and it's so much easier than doing it the way the FSM suggests. The trouble is the rear cam easily jumps a tooth doing it per the FSM. The above method eliminates that entirely.

I did mine by compensating a bit on the crank, clipping the belt to the cams, and also keeping my tensioner bolts loose until all the marks were lined up. Then with the belt on all the marks and clamped, I tightened the tensioner bolts all the way. You also need to keep all your belt's slack on the tensioner side.


That seemed to work quite well, because I had been struggling with it being off a tooth, just like yours prior to that.
 
sorry for re-opening discussion on an old post but I'm experiencing a similar issue. I'm doing the timing belt/water pump on my 99 4Runner and all was going well, I had everything set to TDC and I was installing the new timing belt when suddenly one Camshaft moved. I read several posts and came to the conclusion i could rotate clockwise back go TDC. So i did so, put the crankshaft back on and rotated 2 revolutions to test the timing and now the crankshaft is off when the cams are at TDC. What happened? What can I do in this situation? This is my first time tackling this job and I've been very careful and tedious but as Im finding out, things happen. So thanks in advance I've came here to read many posts before but I finally joined. Thanks for any help!!:help:

The crankshaft makes multiple revolutions in the time the camshaft makes one. The marks on the belts are ONLY for help in lining it up, once you start testing they will never match up right again. What matters is that when the camshafts are at TDC, the crankshaft tooth marked red is also at TDC.
