One wheel further back than the other?

Hi,

Have a 2004 Limited with a full ICON 2.5" lift:
• Icon 2.5 Extended Travel Coil-over Shocks
• Icon Tubular UCA’s
• Icon Rear 2” Springs
• Icon Rear VS 2.0 Shocks
• all associated caps, guards etc.

Also have installed:
• SCS Stealth 6 Matte Gunmetal Rims 17x8.5
• BFG AT 285/70r17- 5 tires

Here is my issue,.. I of course had a bit of rub on both sides,.. after all, the tires are a bit bigger than stock :). The rubbing was constrained to the outside of the tires rubbing on the inner, bottom portion of the wheel well, at about 60% lock (if I turned left, the outside of the US Drivers-side tire would rub as it hit fender, never the inside of the tire, and turning right would do the same with the US Passenger-side tire on its' outer edge).

I removed the front mud flaps and the US Drivers side still rubs. The tire appears to be about 1/2-1" further back than the US Passenger side?!

No damage history,.. shop put it on a lift and checked for any damage and zero there. Looks great and pampered (although they are NOT a frame repair shop - and I saw no bends/creases either)

Has anyone seen anything like this before?.. is there a way to adjust this on an IFS vehicle?.. I had it aligned and she tracks straight without issues and all the numbers in factory spec.

As I am back home for a few weeks before I leave the area again to work for our beloved Uncle Sam,.. I'd love to get this resolved ASAP.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Sounds like the caster (relation of front wheels to being centered in wheel wells) is out of spec. It's adjustable at the front wheels via the lower control arm.

Fwiw when I put my larger tires on before trimming the mud flaps and the alignment, I rubbed mostly on the drivers side. Not sure what it is about them that seems it's tighter over there. Mayne is right though. Although perhaps in spec, there could be some tolerance differences in your castor settings. Not sure if your UCAs are adjustable, but if so, pushing the front wheels as far forward as you can might take care of your rubbing.

Before you start changing and adjusting suspension geometry, I would take a few measurements. Try measuring the distance between the two right side wheels and the two on the left side. I like to use two levels, placed vertically, so they bisect the centerline of each wheel, and then take a measurement between the levels, Then do the opposite side, and compare measurements. If there is more than a 1/4" difference between sides, then you may have a problem, and need to have a competent chassis/alignment shop check your suspension. With all the suspension upgrades, something may have been installed incorrectly. I wouldn't use the visual space between a tire and fender clearance to make any type of definitive call on suspension geometry.

Also, if you do find an obvious difference in the measurements, try having someone else drive the vehicle, in a straight line, while you follow behind and check how the rear wheels track with the front. If there is a significant difference between sides, the rear axle will usually track outward from the front in the direction of the side with the larger measurement.
