opened up my air intake for the first time...functional hood scoop

So...

I opened up my air intake for the first time since buying my runner in November. Its a 2006 4runner SE 4x4 V6 4.0L

Noticed that it had a filter...than inside the actual engiene it looked like it had another mesh filter...

what is that? whats it for?

After seeing it...it dawned on me that the 4runner certainly lacks a good amount of air intake...especially given where the regular air intake is...i thinks its in the front left wheel well.

can somesome shed some light on this?


anyone attempt to make the hood scoop actually functional?

The hood scoop is only functional for the diesel model (which can't be bought in the US).

If you take the blocking plate out, what will you do to stop water and dust entering the engine bay? This would not be good for the engine overall.

What are you trying to achieve? HP gains, cooler engine ??

I think you have misread or misunderstood my post.

It was just a simple questions of "what is that mesh filter thing in my engiene next to the actual air intake filter?"

thats all.

the mesh is just a secondary filter. it is not replaceable so make sure not to tear it off.

That secondary mesh filter is some kind of charcoal activated filter than catches burned or unburned fuel/exhaust that was in the combustion chambers at the time when the car was turned off. Apparently, its possible to backflow into the intake manifold and can make it all the way to the atmosphere through the air filter. Another one of those emissions things, I guess..
