If the car locks automatically either once placed into drive or after passing a certain speed, it is not to keep people out. It is to make sure people don’t open the door from the inside. Pretty smart if you ask me. Either don’t auto lock the doors at all, or only auto unlock them once the car is in park. Seems reasonable.

The auto lock appears to have been implemented to help keeps doors closed during car accidents. It also has the added benefit of preventing carjackings. It has really nothing to do with preventing occupants from opening doors-see child locks. I like to turn off the Auto Unlock and leave the doors locked until I open the door. That way if I forget to lock the car only one door will be unlocked. I probably wouldn’t buy a car that kept u from opening the door when locked.

Anyone capable of opening a door is capable of unlocking it so to most people here it seems like a completely pointless complaint.

it actually primarily to make sure doors are closed in an accident, and also to keep people out.

it's not to keep people in, that's what child safety locks are for
 
I will have to hand it to OP ... for having the balls to admit she is that, well, no good way to say it, eh?

Does she wear seat belts?

She'll be first in line to sue Toyota when she is stuck in a sinking vehicle.

Sorry to hear that your girlfriend escaped. That's always a hassle. Especially this time of year with school not in session. It's hard to know where to go and when to find a new one. Shopping malls and public pools are probably your best bet but it's definitely tough.

Easiest fix I've seen is to loop a chain around one of the seat legs - just complete the loop with a lock - then you can cuff her to the chain. The "oh shit" handle looks like an inviting anchor but in reality it invites too many awkward questions. The chain is much more discrete. Even better is a cable with a black covering but then you have to crimp it - you can probably rent the correct crimpers though.

Let us know what you end up doing and how it goes.
 
There's a kit out that replaces the red release button with a ''Cuff'' key lock.......and it works on the pair in the Nightstand too!:rockon:

Thank you all for the helpful responses. And for those who are trollin, it's ok, you guys have your fun. I've been on plenty of internet forums to grow a thick skin, so I don't really care.

Indeed, we do come from older cars, me a '98 "econobox" Acura Integra and her a 03 1IS and both do not have "safety" feature. Once our doors are locked, they are locked, but are easy to open with a one-handed motion of flipping the lock switch and pulling the handle.

Should I apologize too, that I am not affluent enough to buy fancy, expensive new cars? And thus, waited 20 years to get used 2016 4Runner?

I hope to contribute to this forum and community, either helpful or comic relief. If you guys want to be dickheads, its ok, its the internet...

again.. its not a safety issue.. its a convenience feature that you wont find on lower end older vehicles... the dealer actually has the ability via techstream to:

1. lock the doors when you put the car in D -OR- unlock the doors in P
2. lock the doors when you reach a certain speed
3. disable the auto lock/unlock feature altogether

It comes down to personal preference. The door handle has an integrated mechanism to UNLOCK as you pull the lever no matter how the dealer has set it for you. This forum gets boring w/o the *******s.. it filters out stupid questions

im surprised the is300 didnt have this? I had an integra too and i absolutely regret ever owning one

OP, Welcome to T4R - it really is a great place but its changed greatly over the years as the platform has drawn in the "instagram" crowd.

What didn't you like about your Integra? My father is the original owner of a '92 with 50,000 miles. Other than being a little slow...and an automatic, it's a nice little car
