Opinion on new muffler??

Okay so here’s the deal. I just got rid of my truck and got a ’98 v6 3.4L 4runner. I’m looking to get a muffler for this vehicle and I’m 19 years old and you know how us kids are. I want something LOUD. Again I’m 19 and a college student so my budget being kind of tight I’ve narrowed down my selection to either the flowmaster 40 series or a 14” magnaflow. Performance is not a main concern for me if it were I’d go with the magnaflow but the best sound is what I’m looking for. I hear magnaflow is not as aggressive on the idle but only when accelerating and I’ve seen youtube clips of both and can’t get a great idea of the sound of them so here I am. Lay it on me. Flowmaster or magnaflow?

Nobody cares to hear a loudass V6. It will sound awful. Stupid idea.

You know how us kids are... we LOVE loud exhausts!

On idle the magnaflow is not as loud as the flowmaster from design but both sound decent IMO. I have a flowmaster on my 98 and it can get loud when it drones at lower rpms while driving but its not super obnoxious when you step on it either. I have had both on 3rd gens. Its a matter of opinion since your not as worried about performance
 
I have a 40 series Flowmaster on my '99 runner with a 3.4 and honestly I don't like it but I got other things to address before I go another route with my exhaust. Kinda curious to see what others are running myself. I'm sure they'll chime in.

what exactly don't you like about the noise?
 
A 14" is going to be loud, and I mean loud. I'm running a 18" Magnaflow 12255 and it's still pretty loud. It's not to bad, but you can still here it coming.
 
The magnaflow IMO sounds better on the 3.4. I have no cat and whatever flowmaster was on the shelf at autozone is what I grabbed without really caring about sound. I wouldn't have bought it if I wanted to impress anyone that's for sure. It was just a barbie bandaid since my old exhaust was ready to fall off. The magnaflow sounds more at home to my ears with the V6. On a V8, the flowmaster sounds right. I wouldn't buy another flowmaster if I wanted to do my exhaust justice.

It's not really the noise. I ran one on my '88 toy and it actually sounded better than it does on my runner. And the two mufflers are the same. I assumed it would sounded deeper with my 3.4 but it's not the case. Basically it just wasn't what I expected when I put it on. I'm not against the "roar" of a good aftermarket exhaust but at the same time I don't wanna be loud and obnoxious. I take my runner up in the mountains to archery hunt so the last thing I wanna do is scare away all the deer/elk.

Here is another louder muffler you may like since the noise is what your after.

It's a Spintech Muffler I saw FS on tacomaworld tonight and thought of this thread when I read why he was selling it.

I've had the flowmaster super 44 and the origianal 40 on my 4runners. I prefer the super 44 if your going that route. No personal experience with magnaflow.
 
18" Magnaflow. This video was a couple days after install. Its now been well over a year. The idle has become a little louder, a little deeper. I like it now. Its not obnoxious , actually gives some decent sound to a V6.
