Opinions: Blacking out my grille?

Hey guys. Wanted to see what you all think of the idea of blacking my grille. (minus the emblem-- I like the silver contrast) Would it look weird next to the cladding? I've considered blacking all the cladding too, which would probably look pretty cool, but I also like it the way it is. Mine's not really faded yet. But I'm inspired by the rugged look of the 5th gen trail editions. And is plasti-dip the best option for that matte look?

Go for it! This is probably going to be one of my first mods as soon as I am done with finals and graduation.
 
I just blacked out the silver grill, door handles and rear hatch piece on my '03, but then again my truck is black. I am not sure how it would look with yours being silver. Just plasti-dip it and if you don't like it pull it off....:thumb3:
 
Well the snag is the cladding. I know it looks good (imho) on white and silver cars, and momo I saw your job and it looks great...but it is the tricolor factor. And having it look maybe not uniform up the front "chin"...
 
I did all of my cladding. It looks great, but I want to do it again. I'll probably get to it within the next two weeks. I just wanna do it again to make it thicker then it is, I ran out of PD the first time with only 5 cans (that's all the local hardware stores had in stock).
 
I think with your color combo it would look "busy" IMHO. You're right in black and white cars it really compliments the colors. That's why in Momo's and NJ Shadows case it worked out so good. They took the tri-color scheme to two.

The contrast in the grille like you're talking about really makes it pop (see sig).

If you're interested in getting rid of the chrome, my suggestion would be get some gunmetal or smoke plastidip and do it in that. One, you'd be different than all of us "black-out" guys and two, I think the subtle contrast with the silver would look sick. And like the guys said, the great thing about plasti-dip is, if you don't like it, you can just rip it off.

That's exactly my concern. I love the blacked grille though, especially next to blacked headlights, (yours is perfect), it's just the cladding hanging me up. I think I'll give it a shot at some point. I think I like the black side mirrors too-- my driver's side has some scuffing on it from the previous owner anyway. But then I think I'd have to find a way to do the whole bottom cladding. I think it would be cool, it's just that I'm really not that unhappy with it now, and I worry about the cladding getting scuffed easily if I go the plasti-dip route.

I'm just now noticing in this picture too that the black extends around the base of the vehicle (to a lesser degree albeit than 03 cladding). I like the idea of applying this concept to the 4th gen body style (and spec)-- I'd really like to see this done! If it has to be mine, so be it. ;) Thoughts on going all out with the blackout against the silver?
 
It looks like you got in an accident and couldn't bother painting your new grill. Sorry but I gotta say nay to this.

Superman has the right idea though.

I can kinda see, you just blacked the middle post on the grille right? This won't work for me- since I have an 03 grille it's pretty much all or nothing...I don't want to mess with the whole headlight/bumper conversion to get a newer grille to fit either. Yours looks good though, I like it.

I would! I'm not really a fan of chrome details...anything black or matte is a little better to me. Especially since your emblem is already black. And maybe headlights? I just love the blacked headlights. :P

Well thanks! I guess you're right about the '06-'09 grills.

Hope this doesn't clutter up your thread, but I thought I'd post a couple different pics for you though to see an accurate representation (before and after lift and blacked out headlights).

I'm still on the fence about my headlights... Can't go back now though!

But like others said, you can always remove plasti dip from the grill. Good luck in the decision.
