Opinions: Blacking out my grille?

I like what you did to both the headlights and the grille. Bought 4 cans of Plastidip yesterday to do the rims, and am still trying to figure out how I want to apply it on the grille.

I think I'm gunna! Then all I need to do is the two silver pieces in the middle of the bumpers and the roof racks.

I already did all my badging and my wheels with plasti dip and I love the contrast between the salsa red and the flat black.

Now I have to figure out how to get the wiring for my Hella's out of the insert... Crap.

I want to do my headlight and my taillights! I think momo.75 did his tail lights and they look amazing.

The headlights took me two nights when I did it because I wanted to give them extra time to dry after painting them-- taking apart the assembly to get the headlight out and apart though took less than an hour. If you're asking about the tail lights, you can't take those apart and paint them yourself. You just have to replace them with a new fixture, and that takes about 2 minutes. I got the depo's off amazon recently-- they're the same style as momo's.

I'm pretty certain he bought those. I tried to black my tail lights out (before upgrading to the '06 units) but kinda ruined one with baking. The glue never melted, but the lens did eventually start melting. The tails had a small flat spot that luckily wasn't very noticeable, needless to say I didn't try baking the other side.

edit- whoops- just read your entire post Patrick_A, my bad.

double edit- and it takes 2 minutes if you have small hands!!!! it's a bit tougher if not.

I can't really remember how long it took me to do my headlights. I had bought some used OEM lights off ebay so if i messed them up it wouldn't have been a big loss. I worked on them over a weekend i think. As far as the tails, i either bought them from Burtman or off ebay.

Ok. I'll have to do some searching, but I might keep my lights how they are now. I need to save for performance, not aesthetics lol.

You could easily do your headlights in a day and it wouldn't cost you hardly anything. Just take your time.
 
What type of paint are you guys using for painting the grille? I want to re-paint mine soon because of a few chips! But I want to get a better paint!

Plasti-Dip! Works way better than paint. I did mine in paint the first time and it chipped like crazy.

ill second that. did mine with paint at first, and it was chip n dales all up on that biz. (i dont know why i decided to talk like that)

and then i sprayed plastidip over it with a clear coat and havnt had any problems.

The contrast in the grille like you're talking about really makes it pop (see sig).

If you're interested in getting rid of the chrome, my suggestion would be get some gunmetal or smoke plastidip and do it in that. One, you'd be different than all of us "black-out" guys and two, I think the subtle contrast with the silver would look sick. And like the guys said, the great thing about plasti-dip is, if you don't like it, you can just rip it off.

I keep deliberating this and the more I think about it, the more I like this smoke idea. That way I can still get the aggressive look an have it match the cladding without having to dip the whole thing. Stay tuned!
 
Take a look at the picture of mine. The previous owner plastidipped it, I think it looks nice, I will probably be redoing it as it is peeling.
