Opinions - is this rust bad?

I'm considering purchasing this 4runner. Clean body and interior, SR5 manual, full service records, 140k miles.

I asked for photos of the underbody. Would the rust turn you away from this one?

What steps could I take to prevent further rust? Do you think this will get much worse, or is natural surface rust for an old car. I'd love to keep the truck for a LOOONNGGGG time, maybe lifting and turning it into a trail ride one day ... Thanks!

it looks good overall, but i say that apprehensively. really good in some spots (fresh paint?), a little better than average in others (faded paint, some surface rust). What worries me is the fresh paint. If proper rust repair was done, or undercoating applied, then good deal. but if they're trying to hide some serious rot with shiny black paint, no bueno.

Pictures look decent, but i encourage you to get it on a lift or crawl under it if you go see it in person.

not the exact answer you are looking for, but it is my opinion after all. as for future rust prevention, using a undercoating like POR-15 Or other Rust prevention, like Fluid Film or undercoating from somewhere like Ziebart will help keep the rust at bay. But be sure to wash it in the winter, road salt kills. Even just every payday and a quick rinse of the undercarriage does wonders!

I think that's a fine answer. I was looking at the pictures and couldn't figure it out myself! The truck is pretty far sadly. I'd have to feel very strongly about a purchase before making the trip. Not sure how I feel.

Nah, that ain't bad at all. Little surface rust. But easily sanded and painted over. Every car rusts the moment it's on the dealers lot. The moment oxygen touches bare metal. It starts to rust. Might microscopic but it's there. Either way,it ain't bad and little rust can be easily taken care of. But since it's far ride. Just be patient and look around.

Looks solid OP. Check the back of the frame rails back where a tow hitch might be mounted.

If you do buy it, consider undercoating it with something like Fluid Film.

I contacted the shop where it used to get work done. They said its super clean and well maintained but previous owner traded it in since it needs a front diff.. Sigh... What's a clean 4runner that needs a front diff worth in your opinion? I'm new to the game, check the post count :lmao:
