Opinions of Aftermarket RH Side Bumpers

[Last Man Standing]

I need to replace my RH side rear bumper as it is rusting thru on my
02 Sport and wondered if anyone has used these before? I checked on
the OEM ones thru Olathe Toyota but a bit pricey compared to the after-
market ones on Ebay for $38 delivered. If memory serves me Olathe
wanted another $110 + S&H and if difference is negligible then this is
up for consideration? Anyone used these before and opinions appreciated!

I replaced my entire rear bumper on my 98 4 runner with Rock auto bumper and both ends. I gave it all 2 coats of rustoleum gloss back in the inside as mine are chromed on the outside. Then a super coated the entire bumper with fluid film.

The later 3rd gens have some that are painted key match the ride (my 01 runner is this way). I suspect your 02 sport is a color matched bumper as well.

I couldn't justify the costs of the bumpers OEM. Granted the OEM probably have thicker chrome on them then aftermarket.

I have a 98 silver Runner that a previous owner painted with raptor lining it looks like over the Chrome bumpers. That actually looks pretty decent.


I would use those eBay sides as long as they matched up. Isn't your other side rusted out as well?

With 30 days return and you pay shipping, you could always get one and see how it matches up and if it doesnt or super poor quality return it.

There is some rust on middle and LHS but the side with the exhaust is in bad shape and rust is bleeding thru. I do have color matched bumpers, so I was interested in the fit and gauge of the aftermarket ones in particular?

Mostly they are slightly thinner, in my situation, I replaced it all to match and my entire bumper was toast as it was OEM with nothing left.

I know mine from rock auto were slightly thinner but I believe I got all 3 pieces
for $225.09 USD delivered to my door.

My 01 has after market driver side as it sustained damage years ago. By quick look you couldn't tell it was different.

I think your right, for $40 delivered and some effort on my part
to paint and undercoat whats to loose, but a bit of time and a small
amount of money......

inc. tax........................

I included an album of my 98 named Tetanus 1 and you can see what my rock auto bumper back and sides if interested. Send me photos of the repaired bumper. I enjoy seeing folks patch up these 3rd gens..

The spray can has an interesting nozzle that allows for a large swath at a time either vertically or horizontally without the need of overlaying the first layer of paint and getting spray lines. I was talking to a friend who used to help out doing body and fender and his advice was wet sand between final coat of base and he said high end work they would do between every layer of clear coat! The paint store said 2-3 layers of base and 2 coats of clear finish and 3 hours between coats to let dry, I will probably let it sit over night....

PS: How was the fit of the aftermarket bumper on the install?

Would have been better.. If I didn't bend my rear bumper bracket... I used a sawzall to remove the old one and that was a very bad idea. I would use a torch or cutting wheel if I were to do it again. ;-)

I bought a complete rear bumper at rockauto, wasn't the cheapest they sell.
Required drilling elongating of holes, bending more like shaping of pieces to achieve the fit I wanted at sides to center section. Was chrome looked real good once installed, you painting gives flexibility to align shape parts n paint.

I didn't have to egg shape any holes from my rock auto bumper. I just messed up using a sawzall instead of an cutting wheel or cutting torch bending the driver side mount some. However, I bought the rock auto premium not the economy.. Good to know. Thanks for the info..
