Opinions?

I have a pretty much stock Sunfire Red runner and have been considering painting the cladding black, I can't stand the gold. I threw some plasti dip on just a single door panel just to get a feeler on how it would look. I have mixed emotions. Eventually I'll end up with the SCS F-5s in a gloss black to bring everything in together, but that won't be for a while. I probably should have sprayed a little more but it can be difficult pulling that stuff of, either way, what do you guys think?

Dude! -I've not been on the forum for a minute and just posted almost the exact same question. What an ass I am. I elided over your thread but I think you helped answer my question. I personally think the plasti-dip looks a little dull (finish wise) to the body. Plus, if it gets a knick it's not so easy to re-do. Just my opinion -

I actually like both. You don't see a whole lot of 4Runners with that color scheme.
 
Haha [MENTION=88079]afg10000[/MENTION] it seems to happen all too often on here! I'm in agreement with you though. I would either paint over it with a gloss or sand them down and prime and paint. I think yours would look good with a gloss as well, or whatever matches the paint on there now. How much is that going to run you if you don't mind me asking? And [MENTION=62779]Kurtis[/MENTION] the gold or silver, whatever you want to call it, has grown on me a lot. The multiple colors with the emblems and wheels just throws me off and when I do end up with bumpers and all tha they will be black.

I think the gold/silver is Thunder Cloud. That's what my 2002 4Runner is.
 
My client (and friend) is doing it so it won't cost me anything. He said about $300 when I originally asked him. I have no idea of cost otherwise. I try and trade work (which I also get to learn from) as often as I can -
 
It says on the original window sticker "gold package" but according to the color chart 4-Ripcord has up you're probably right.

Man I was going to mention you! You and SantaCruzRunner have the same scheme going on as well, at least he used to. I think I'm going to do it but do the gloss instead of the flat or bedliner look and see how it goes. Sick looking rig by the way. Wish I lived out there and could meet up with you guys, seems to be where all the action is.
 
Haha yeah we did but the sunfire red was too sexy for him so be had to get a mustang. I went with Gloss Dublicolor black and I like it. The flat is alright but it looks off next to the shiny factory paint. Plus I did my rear bumper step pad in satin and it looks horrible and faded now but my gloss looks just like when I sprayed it. Not sure if that difference is because they were different brands but I'm happy with the Duplicolor. It's a pain to do but take your time. Are you plasti dipping first or scuffing the paint and using primer? I did plasti dip and it came out well. Some issues but more so because I suck at painting and got impatient. Also go with the matte F-5's as they will match the gloss black better. The gloss F-5's are really shiny. I was going to get the matte black F-5's but I couldnt afford them.
 
He couldn't stay away for long though! I'm probably going to do the plasti dip as a primer and then paint over that opposed to the scuffing method. Have you had any problems with it peeling or tearing like it does from rock chips or does the duplicolor kind of stop that?
 
The only place that is peeling is the rubbing stripping that goes between the flare and body. That is to be expected though as it is hard to paint and is influenced by the elements. Although it's only one spot that it having an issue with that. Other than that the paint has held up great. I have some thick pinstripes in the flares and it didn't chip or peel away. Plus it looks just like before when I remove the paint and plasti dip. I had to do it for one fender and I just rubbed away the paint with acetone and then peeled away the plasti dip. It takes a bit of time, but it's worth it IMO to have the option of going back.
 
It's always nice to be able to go back to stock. One last question, how many cans of paint and dip did you use to coat the whole thing? Thanks for your help
 
If you were planning on going with black wheels in the future then a black trim would tie it in nicely. The limited trim (at least for me) has a way of getting scuffed, so if you do any sort of wheeling you might want to take that into consideration.

Nice 4runner by the way. You don't see to many of those in that trim.
 
I used about 5-6 cans of each I think. Maybe more. Luckily at the time Duplicolor had a buy one get one free so it was cheaper than normal. Good luck!
