Yikes. Sounds scary. I could just imagine that very moment when you pulled that ribbon assembly out....I would have left some serious skid marks!
Great idea though with the copper wire to remove the old LED's...If I ever do anything like this again, which I highly doubt, I will remember that...

Here's some info left over from my LED color changeover. I used the eLED EPT1608YC KLEDs as recommended by webshot. Thses are very little buggers 1.6X.8 mm which are smaller than the ones I removed,. Looking at the eLED site I found the EPT2012YC to be the same size as the green ones on the board and have the same spec as the smaller EPT1608YCs.

If I was to do this again, I'd try the larger LEDs (EPT2012YC)

I have attached a chart which shows the polarity of the LEDs on the faceplate. Might be handy for someone.

thread resurrection!!

i recently did this mod for a 4runner owner that shipped me his unit. i owned a tacoma and have done over 50 of the clusters, handfuls of OEM radios, steering wheel controls and clock/hazard bar, but this was my first non-tacoma job. but soldering is soldering, so without further a dew, here is the money shot (it was green illumination before from my understanding)!

I used the larger LEDs posted in this thread, model EPT2012YC, as they are the same size as the OEM ones as pointed out, and there is simply no reason to torture yourself with smaller than needed LEDs! NAV unit was a model E7009 (MFG: May, 2007), and i found out the hard way that this board's LED polarity is different then the diagram posted here. so here is the polarity diagram for the E7009 (but please double check polarity BEFORE you remove the OEM LEDs...i take a macro pic of whatever im working on before i tear it all apart):

Wow, that NAV looks familiar! LOL. Just wanted to thank Yosh2000 for an incredible job. A job NOT for the faint of heart. Anyway, here is the NAV installed! An E7009 with amber LEDs (factory match).

another thread resurrection by yosh2000!! Thanks again to webshots and the guys that pioneered this stuff. swapped out the green for red.

i did another e7009, but this time it was mine! i used these 0803 LEDs. They are 2mm x 1.2 mm.

Here is the before and after, as well as a shot to show how small the LED is.
