Ordered 295/70r17 cooper discoverer stt pro

For the TLDR CROWD:

this is a summation of this thread and what it took to get THESE tires to fit MY 4runner. Basically this threaded was ended at Ol'Battitudes post a couple post down.

Here my list:
-3 inch level/lift
-total chaos UCA'S (upper control arms)
-alignment set to 4.5 driver and 4.9 pass (this is very important)
-aggressive bmc (body mount chop)
-no front mud flaps
-trim the lower fender mount
-trim front bumper, fender liner pushed forward as far as possible
-trim fender liner plastic above body mount area
-cut black rocker panel fender piece

All of these mods got me to survive suburban life without rubbing. I will update as I start my offroad adventures this spring

---------------------------------------------------------------

I ordered these tires so there is no turning back now. I tried searching but couldn't find a lot of info on this specific tire and size, let alone 295's in general. I have a 3/2 spacer kit going on as well. Putting them on 17x8 wheels with 5 inches of backspace. So my question, will I absolutely need UCA'S?

And I'm trying to avoid bmc at all costs. Something just doesn't sit right with cutting on a 200 mile 2 week old vehicle. But may consider it if it will save me from buying UCA'S.

Manufacturer has them rated at 33.46 inches

Thanks for the advice.

There's only one way to find out and that's once their on your truck. I'm concerned over the aspect ratio though, that is a wide tire and combined with spacers you may be exacerbating your potential to rub.

Ah read that wrong, spacer lift kit not wheel spacers. I maintain my concerns over the width of this wheel though.

You will need UCA's, a BMC and to remold the front liner. You will rub like crazy without the last two. You don't need UCA's if you dont care about your alignment and tire life.

295/70 will most certainly rub. Put them on and see what needs to be done from there.

I definitely planned it would rub. Just wondering if I should just do the uca while I'm doing the lift if they will be necessary.

Yes, alignment and tire life are important to me. Looks like I will be ordering UCA'S.

Take it from someone who has these exact tires mounted on their 5th Gen 4Runner; you will need to do everything in the book to make these fit properly.
You might have a higher tolerance for horrible rubbing noises and tires gouging out your fenderwells, but if you're anything like me you'll need to get some work done or you will be hating life.
The 295/70 R17 is basically a 34 x 12.5 and are noticeably different than your standard 285/70 upgrade in terms of how much contact they will make with your 4Runner.

Here's a list to give you an idea of what I had to do to avoid these tires making contact with my vehicle with a 3" lift and 8" wide 4" backspaced wheels with no spacers:

AllPro UCA's with 5+ caster dialed in - you are going to need to push the wheels ahead as far as they will safely go.
Body mount chopped as far back as it will safely go
Front bumper installed to clearance that end, otherwise front fender well mod will need to be done.
Should go without saying that the mud flaps have been removed.

This got me to the point where I could use forward and reverse gears with only occasional rubbing while on pavement.

To avoid tire contact during suspension articulation and full steering lock, further and Extensive modification (cutting, grinding, hammering and material replacement) of the rear of the fender wells was required.

See THIS post from my build thread, as well as THIS one.

After reading through this, I swear I could literally hear the OP's hopes and dreams just hit the floor...

I mean sheesh, guy had plans of trimming plastic and dodging UCA's, then finds out the BMC and fairly extensive fender well modification is going to be necessary. That was one end of the spectrum to another.

Who makes a large purchase (34's) and doesn't research what it's going to take?

I mean hell, I spent a solid couple hours just doing my homework on which LED interior lights I would use

Wouldn't say that. Just more expensive. And more explaining to the wife why a brand new 4runner needs cutting/grinding/welding.
I feel ya there man haha. My CFO would take at least a bottle of wine before I broke that news to her lol

Yeah, 295's and especially 315's are something you really only want to step in to after you've already gone up to something like a 285 and done some of the base work to get those to fit. My experience anyway.

For me, the only additional work I had to do when switching from a 285 to a 295 was to dial in a bit more positive caster and do the additional clearancing of the rear parts of the fenderwell. Of course that was the most expensive part.... if you can do the work yourself, then it's just a matter of time and not so much hundreds of dollars.

And to be honest I didn't think .43 inches taller and 1 centimeter wider would make all the much difference. But when I search this tire size mostly threads about 285s come up.

Well here's to good wine. Lol

I was a motorcycle mechanic for 8 years. So everything except the alignment will be done by me. I just came from the jeep world. Where on a jk you can trim the flares flat and fit 35's. So it's shaping to be a steep leaning curve.

These 295 STT Pros are big tires...I have a buddy running them on his Tacoma with a big lift and he ran into rubbing issues, they are wide...good luck!

Adjustments can be made to fit the tires... 295 is just a 33.4 or so.

May need to do the BMC. UCAs will be required to get the wheels far enough forward and keep the camber in spec.

Bigger concern was the wheels. 5" of BS is too much. It will rub the UCA... You want 4.1-4.5

Looks like I will add wheel spacers to the list.

Wheel spacers will cause another problem (unless you can find a really small one about 1/2"). With a 1.25"....you will have too much scrub radius...

Again, you want an 8" wheel with 4.1-4.5BS. This will give you the best chance of clearing the tires without rubbing. 4.5 is your best bet.

Just buy wheels that fit. I never understand why people buy off sizes... FN wheels or SCS are great choices to get a good wheel that will fit perfectly.

I was afraid you would say that. how bad do you think it will be?
