Oregon Inlet Recommendations/Tips

I'm headed to Nags Head, NC soon for a vacation and I'd like to drive onto the beach (south of NH at Oregon Inlet).

I've read some threads here, but was looking for some specific info on locations and getting any needed permits.

I know to air down and stay steady on the gas - but I'll take any further driving tips as well.
