Out with the old, in with the new(er)

Just traded my 2003 4Runner Sport in for a 2008 SR5. Couldn't be happier, although there are some things that I miss from my sport, like the JBL 10 speaker and the 6 disk changer, but overall I am very excited about the new whip. Here's a few pics of the old and the new

I will post better pics once I wash and wax her, I have already started with some small things. I moved my WeatherTech DigitalFit floormats over, installed all my cool white wide angle LED bulbs, replaced the passenger mirror, and getting ready to replace all the interior speakers with the ones from my old runner, just excited to have a new project to work on. And the wishlist is already a few grand of new stuff :biggrin2:

Just an observation:

The pic of the rear lift gates on both the older and newer 4runners...the badges on the back of the 03 "Toyota" and "4Runner" are up further to bottom of the rear window. My 03 (same color and cladding as yours!) has it on the lower rear gate area (like your new one).

Does anyone know if there's a reason why they were put in different places?

Just curious.

BTW, congrats on the new rig. I'll NEVER sell my 03. I love the cladding-look and it's my baby.

The pic of the rear lift gates on both the older and newer 4runners...the badges on the back of the 03 "Toyota" and "4Runner" are up further to bottom of the rear window. My 03 (same color and cladding as yours!) has it on the lower rear gate area (like your new one).

They were either moved by the owner for some reason, or the tailgate was repaired by a body shop and they "eyeballed" them way high. Toyota did not put those there.

Thanks, my 03 was my baby too, but too many parts were going bad on her and I needed something newer. As for the badges, I always wondered about that, the rear gate definitely was repainted at some point, it had orange peel on the lip where the window comes down.

Thanks! I already replaced all the interior bulbs with wide angle cool white LED bulbs, I'm still undecided if I want to tackle the guage clusters

Thanks Mark, yes, I am going from an 03 V6 to an 08 V6 so I was able to keep my K&N Drop in filter and am very familiar with the engine.

So I removed the pitiful magnetless speakers from the SR5 stereo, and replaced them with my Alpine Type S speakers and Audiobahn 1" silk dome tweeters that I had on my old JBL amp, and I am not happy with the lack of power from the stock head unit. I already have a set of MB Quart Reference Component 6x9's and tweeters that I was planning to put in when I install an amp and head unit, so I am looking into getting another set of MB Quart components for the rear, a 4 channel amp, and a double din navi head unit. I already ordered the stock JBL sub enclosure for my JL 8" sub that I never put in my 03 sport, and need an amp for that as well. Looks like I'll be moving very quickly on the stereo upgrade :frisky:

There are two ways to address lack of power.

#1 - OBVIOUSLY just upgrade the unit to a more powerful system.

#2 - Buy more efficient speakers.

JBL is mostly known for building very high efficient pro-audio speakers. Their car and home speakers are among the most efficient speakers available. Last JBL car speakers I owned had an efficiency rating of 94dbs. Alpine on the other hand is NOT noted for making high-efficiency speakers. Some models I've seen are as low as 85db's efficiency. That would mean you'd have to have an amp that's putting out almost 100 watts of power to drive the Alpine speakers to the same sound level as the JBL's with just 1 watt of power.

I no longer have the JBL system, I'm going off the base headunit which has no power. I had no issue when I was pushing my Alpine speakers with the JBL amp, it wasn't until I moved to the new truck that had no amp or preamp that I had these issues

Just ordered a new Double Din Navi Headunit, a 4 Channel Amp, a monoblock amp for my JL sub, and all new front and rear components, that should help with my audio issues :frog:

Had a problem with the highs amp that I purchased, so I'm sending it back for an exchange before I get started, but here's what I have in store for the new 08 SR5 :wow2:

And so it begins, I picked up a stock JBL sub enclosure off of ebay, and went to work stripping it down to get ready for the JL 8w3

Did a test fit just for the hell of it

Also removed the stock wiring and amp

And here's my next project, I'm going to follow ark_swamprider's guidance and grind down all the fins to make room for the JL. The main audio install begins tomorrow night

It will fit, the only question is will I have to use a spacer or not. I'm hoping not, but won't know until I get all that junk removed. Looking at your pic comparison it doesn't look much taller than your w1

Agreed, I was hoping to get by without the spacer, which us what I meant by fit. I know others have used this sub with a spacer.

Thanks man, I'm really hoping that I can pull it off without a spacer, but I'm pretty much expecting to need one. The test fit pic with the box in the sub it's actually sitting on the spacer from the stock 8
