I got a really nice 4-burner at sears for around $400. Also get one stainless steel or without paint. My sisters burned off all the paint within a couple years and looked like hell. also make sure the grates are heavy cast iron and not stamped metal which will warp. Good luck!

More realistically though, Quatre is right. Either stainless steel, or enamel finish. I personally like Brinkman, and you can get some seriously impressive grills for $2-300. Home depot usually will have the best selection, and always seem to have a sale going on.
One cool option to consider is, some grills are made for natural gas, which means instead of a propane tank, you just buy a special hose that connects to your house, if you happen to heat with natural gas. No worries about running out of propane.
Personally, I think this grill is a great choice.
Also, if you could find one fully assembled somewhere, he would definitely appreciate that. Assembling grills is a PITA

My parents had one when I was in high school years ago- we loved that thing. Found it used. I think they are still like $700+ new though.
They ended up selling it for $300. OP, if you can find one used.. very worth it.

Here's the one Lowes is selling now and it's about $300. I've checked it out a few times and it was hard to walk away. I just don't do that much grilling anymore.

Look on CL. You can find great deals, and they're already assembled. A lot of the $300ish grills Lowes and Home Depot sell are not the highest quality. I've known a few people who got them and they only lasted a couple years. The pans will rust out and the grates don't seem to last that long. I found a Weber that was in great condition, just dirty, for $50!
Make sure you get a cover if it stays outside.
Weber makes one of the best grills, and they last a long time...Plus replacement parts are generally easy to find. Lowes has a good stock for Weber grills.

I've got the Spirit 310, and love it. It heats up fast (600* in about 7 minutes), and everything has cooked evenly. All Webers have their burners going left to right instead of front to back like a lot of other makers. I found it easier to cook indirectly that way.

Yes Webers are the best! They're just so darn $$$! I have a portable Weber charcoal grill that Ive owned for 30 years! Still in great condition. That Weber u 'stole' for $50 is sweet...

Interesting type of grill. We use gas. Wood in the smoker. We grill everything, but he's the more creative one with it.
Fruits, veggies, various meats, bread... ect..

It appears that these are only charcoal, is that correct? You're right, such good reviews. Is it because of this shape?

I like the BGE because it has really good efficiency for a non-gas grill. It uses very little charcoal/wood/etc and has a big surface area like the old Weber round grills. Plus you can stack layers if you are smoking. And if you don't use all of the charcoal/wood you can stuff it out and use the rest later. I'm sure there's a lot more too it that can be found online, I just know I want it. :hungry:
My neighbor bought one a few years ago and I've checked it out on occasion. It seems like a big expense but I've been through two gas grills and two charcoal grills since then. I guess that $700 doesn't seem like such a bad deal in retrospect. The cheaper one I linked makes it even more tempting.
Yeah, charcoal or natural wood charcoal. I think it's the shape, thermal properties/efficiency, and multiple uses that wins people over. Plus by itself it has a smaller footprint than some of these bigger gas units. My neighbor has his mounted on the rolling cart thing though so it's big... and awesome.

Yeah he'd probably prefer gas then. Some guys are very picky and specific when it comes to grilling. If you want it to be a complete surprise and not discuss it with him beforehand, I probably wouldn't give him a charcoal grill and see if the guys here can suggest a good gas grill.

Shopping carts won't link. But I'd look for something with push button starters for all heating elements, porcelain coated grates, and something that fits his needs size wise. Weber really is one of the best brands but they are pricey.
The run of the mill stainless Char-broil/Master Forge types are the ones I kept having to replace. They look great out of the box and will work for a few years, they just don't seem to be meant for long term ownership, unless he is meticulous with care and stores it out of the elements.
Check reviews on Amazon too - they typically have more info than the store reviews.
