Overdrive Problem

I have the dreaded "won't shift into Overdrive" issue. Here are the particulars:

97 4runner, 3.4L 5ZE 4WD

1. Problem is ambient temperature dependent - it shifts into Overdrive when the outside temperature is over 80 degrees
2. It takes 40 miles on the highway for the transmission to shift into Overdrive - this happens at any outside temperature.
3. Sometimes it will kick in when the cruise control is engaged when the outside temperature is warm (70 degrees +).

Here's what I've done so far:

1. Changed thermostat
2. Changed Coolant Sensor
3. Inspected the bypass hose - no kinks or clogs.

What should I look at next? The transmission shifts perfectly in every other gear.

When was the last time you had the fluids in the trans replaced both torque converter and trans itself. The graph plates may be clogged. Other issue maybe a sensor failure not signalling the trans to shift.

Thanks for the reply, obex. The fluid was changed by the dealer in May (at least that's what they told me and the fluid looks new). That's when I bought the 4runner.

As for the sensor, which one are you talking about? Is there a sensor in the tranny? If so, it is easy to replace?

I think I read about the OD solenoid having something to do with this issue, but I wanted to get some opinions before I dove into that repair.
