"Oversized" Oil Filter?

I'm planning on using Wix oil filters on my 2005 V6 4Runner, and I'm interested in your experiences. It seems like the "standard" filter for this application would be the Wix 51348, which replaces the Toyota 90915-yzzD3, 90915-yzzB5, and the TRD 90915-200004.

But there's a bigger filter that seems like it would work - Wix 51515. This is a replacement for the TRD 90915-007.

Anyone have experience with these filters on a current generation 4Runner?

Refer to this <A HREF="http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5168&highlight=oil+filter">THREAD</A> for some interesting info and pics on filter sizes, brands, etc. After reading the above, when I saw they were going to install a small PH3614 sized filter at my last oil change, I asked them to use a compatible larger filter to improve filtration and capacity and they happily did so, using a PH16 sized equivalent... They agreed the smaller one didn't make much sense, but that's what the cross ref told them to use. So much for human thinking. "<I>Duh...If it's in the book, then it must be true!"<I>

I did some research on parts number cross refs earlier, and here's what I found:

The FRAM cross reference for the latter two part numbers are:

TOYOTA 90915-20004 = FRAM PH3614 (which seems puny for a V6)

TOYOTA 90915-YZZB5 = FRAM PH16 (consideraly larger, more appropriate in my opinion)

Interestingly enough, FRAMs site quotes the "PH3614" for both the V8 and the 4.0L V6 VVTi. That's a tiny filter for such big engines. A 3614 looks like it belongs on a four-banger.

Thanks! I did a bunch of searching through the forums yesterday, and had discovered that thread. As you said, it's very interesting, and it's what led me to choose the Wix 51515 for my 2005 4Runner V6.

The thing is, I haven't read any messages where someone actually *used* that Wix filter on this engine. It'll probably work fine, but I'd feel better hearing from someone who uses it.

Finding the "right" filter is a crap shoot, depending on which cross reference you use... Using the TRD as the baseline is a good choice. I've updated the cross ref findings and will edit as I discover more inconsistencies...

I asked my parts guy at hte dealership about those oversized filters. He told me it was not necessary. He would sell me it, but I did not need it. Don't know if he was right, but the oversized toyota(trd)version was mainly used in the land cruiser. And as long as there is a anti-drain back valve, it is fine to use the regular toyota filter, said toyota's filters are pretty good(baised opinion). Some other people told me the same thing. Toyota filters are good, a regular sized filter w/anti-drain back valve works fine and never use fram oil filters.

Can the Napa Gold 1515 be used in a 1997 SR5 yota

Has anyone used the Wix 51515 or the Napa Gold 1515 on a 3rd Generation Toyota?

I've got a 1997 SR5, V6 and would like to find out if anyone in Yota land has used this filter with success.

I managed to find a dozen of the original Densos- the Japanese ones, so I'm good for a while. When I need new ones, I may try tohe Wix. The Baldwins I normally use in all the other vehicles are also very expensive.

Now I need to go to Bobisttheoilguy.com and geek out on which oil to use. I already geeked out on it for 2-3 hours last night.

:lmao: That's been my latest obsession too. No doubt some of the diesel oils look great but I don't want to buy cats later. I'm trying ENEOS 5w-20 now. I'm up to about 4k with my Napa 1806 and it's running great, mechanically quiet (for a 1GRFE), good mpg and visually the oil looks great. Who knows what the right answer is. For less money you could buy the cheapest oil and filter every 3500 miles and beat the snot out of it for 250k with NO issues.

Maybe I'll see you over there in a Geekout session

I was on there reading threads till around 1:00 AM last night and am useless at work today. Who knew oil could obsess a guy this way. Women and drugs- I understand...but oil?:keyboard:

I'm almost convinced that a regular dino like Havoline and a decent filter with ~4K changes will be a much better option that adding moly and chasing down Euro oils.

I use the V8 filter on my V6 and even my wifes V6 Highlander. They work fine.
