Anyone use these? Looking at the RV5 and can get a pretty good deal on it compared to the RTT I've been eye balling.

Now I don't want to turn this into a RTT vs ground at this point I'm well aware of the differences.

One thing the oztent would open up for me is camping out of my boat in the lake during summer.

My wife, 3 boys and dog are want I'm looking to fit in it.

Hi Vinsil, yeah Oztents are high quality. I have a RV2 and do like it a lot. I have seen the RV5 and you could swing it w/5 people in sleeping bags. For me, I use stretchers in mine and more comfortable for the kiddos but I don't think 5 stretchers would fit the RV5 comfortably.

If you added accessories like the tagalog or front and side panels, I believe that would work better. Just my opinion, I like my space but add-ons equal more change.

It's definitely challenging trying to make a whole family comfortable out there in a one rig scenario...there are 5 of us too

RV5 is just big enough for 2 adults in cots comfortably. 5 people? No way.

Pro's- Super quick setup, great quality, "lifetime" purchase

Con's- BIG and heavy. Hard to get into the bag when it's cold (PVC floor gets stiff), expensive!


I have used mine 4 times and I love it. Don't be fooled by the under 30 second setup though. If you peg it out correctly and setup the awning you are looking at about 10 minutes.

Yeah I watched a video on the setup. 30 seconds...then like you said...the rest of the setup!

It's looking like the tag along is mandatory for the kiddos for sure. Even at 40% off...I'm near the RTT once I factor in the other stuff again. Might just sleep in my boat, it has enough room in the end....

There's another thread on here about them, but I'll post a few observations. I've had an RV-5 for just over a year now.

-It's well big enough for two adults and two dogs with room to spare for personal bags. Would it work with three kids? Maybe, but it would be cramped. Three adults could fit comfortably with a good bit of room in between their sleeping pads and have room for their stuff.

-It'll take 5-10 minutes to properly peg it out (depending on anticipated wind conditions) and set up the awning, and even longer if you're going to add side panels and such, but it truly is 30 seconds to get a waterproof shelter up. So if it's already raining, one person can stake it out while the other sets up bedding inside.

-I'm just over 6ft and can stand up and change my clothes inside the tent, but only on the front end.

-Mine travels either on the factory 4Runner rack or in the bed of my F-150. Gas mileage is affected slightly when it's on the roof, but not too bad and only on interstate.

-I'm overall very happy with it and I'm considering an RV-1 for solo trips.

When I was a kid and we camped as a family, I liked being in my own tent. Maybe you can have a kids' tent and a mom & dad tent.

I bought an RV-4 after realizing the little extra you get from the 5 wasn't worth the extra cost to me. Not sure how it fits inside a 5th gen, but in a 3rd gen it has to rest on the center console :-/. Custom roof rack in progress....

You could EASILY sleep 5 adults even in an RV-4 on camp pads if you had to. Cots, 2 adults with room for gear and some space for a pup or a kid or 2.

The cool thing about these tents is how you can customize them, which was one of the bigger selling points to me.

Now.....if we could just get Drifta accessories in the states reasonably....

It's supposedly not that bad right now, but there's a minimum order amount ($300, as I recall). Shouldn't be that hard to get a group thing going.

So true. I would love to get a Drifta storage bag.

Oztent storage bags are junk. I'm on my 3rd sleeping bag storage bag (and that's already tearing) and the Oztent storage bag is already ripping...

They can't be made in the same factory- the quality of the product that goes into the storage bags is far superior.

What's weird to me is how well my storage bag is holding up.

I double checked and the minimum is $350 AU. The RV-4 bags are about $160 and the RV-5 bags are about $170. Just throwing that out there.

I would like to get some of the poles and a bag, but the poles would have to go in a shipping container$$$. There are a couple of snow peak items of interest too. I've noticed some of that stuff is available on Amazon but it's a little spendy.

I like the Oz tents but can't get over how long it is in storage. I ended up getting a kodiak canvas. Nice tent and easy to set up.

There's reasons that the OzTent and Kodiak are considered the two "overland" tents that people tent to compare others to.

Our RV-4 got beat on with the crazy winds in Flagstaff at the Overland Expo. All staked out with guy lines it was absolutely solid. Only wish the back window would zip entirely shut instead of the 3 Velcro attachments along the bottom.
