P rated vs LT

How many of you guys are running P rated tires? I am looking at these:

Price doesn't really matter to me, I will get what is necessary. I drive mostly highway, and have only been offroad once. I do plan on more, but nothing extreme since this is my DD. I haul the occasional load, but if its something really heavy, I have access to a trailer at work. I do plan on getting a boat next spring, but most of the weight is on the trailer, not the tongue, so that shouldn't matter.

I had P rated 265s before the LT E rated I have on now, and it drove sooooo much better. These E rated are harsh, and I'm not sure if the E rated in these BFGs would be any better.

P rated are Max load 2575, weigh 45lbs, and are 32.8 OD
LT are ML 3195, weigh 50lbs, and are 32.3 OD.
Tread depth is negligent, as P rated is only 2/32nds shorter.

Do you guys think P rated is enough, or should I go LT? What have you guys gone with?

If you are going to wheel, the P series tires have weak sidewalls.

If you only do gravel/fire roads, the P series are probably fine.

I know of someone that had 3 different P series tires flat on one trail.

What pressure were you running. True, a LT tire will ride a little firmer but at the right pressure, they shouldn't be harsh.

Maybe its just the tire then, but they seem stiff. I run them at 38-40. I never really have the runner loaded down, and mostly road driving. Plus the roads around here suck. They just seem "hard".
 
You are running way too much psi in your tires. The door plack on my runner says 29psi with a P rated tire. E rated tires have a much high max psi, but they need that for the much heavier load capacity, for every day driving you don't need that. If you have no load on them, and no armor on your truck then I would not run anything more than like 32psi, unless you want better mileage, then it won't really matter cause both tires at higher psi will ride harsh(but p not as much as lt/e). I was running my e rated nittos at like 28psi and I never had an issue. but I wanted better mileage and dont care about tire wear at this point so I'm now running at 45psi.
 
When I first got them, I had them at 32 psi. They seemed sluggish and weren't wearing well. I added the pressure and they wore better, and mpgs went up. I went to around 45, and that was too much. Looked up a bunch of threads and people seemd to think 40psi was the magic number.
 
E-rated tires have very stiff sidewalls that's why you get a harsh ride. for 4Runners, the better LT tire would be a D-rated or C-rated unless you're always carrying a heavy load.
P tires are normally for highway and for seldom and mild off-highway use
 
And thats what I normally do. I drive highway to work everyday, and we take my runner on all of our trips. I am thinking for the amount of highway, lack of offroad and hauling, and size I want, P rated should work fine for me.

At least until the wife is done with nursing school and starts making big bucks...I can buy a new DD and then I can get the KM2s I've wanted for this.
 
you're better off with the P-metric or the C-rated tires. with the P-metric tires being lighter, you get to save a bit in fuel costs compared to the C-rated LT tires.

I think, all-terrain tires are also available in P-metric, Bridgestone has the P265/75R16

You definitely don't need "E" rate tires on a 4runner for daily driving. I am running "C" rated LT 265/75/16s and they ride pretty good. The "P metrics" are good for highway but lack the stronger sidewall for off-roading. Like you, I don't go off-road much either. A LT tire with a "C" load rating is a decent mix for highway and mild/medium off-roading. Good luck !
 
I couldn't even find a C rated tire in 285/70-17. I went with a P rated Nitto and am totally satisfied with it. I'm running 32 psi and the ride is acceptable. I didn't want the harsh ride of an E rated tire for a DD rig.

Same here. The BFGs in that size only come in P and E load. For what I need/want, P should work out fine for me.
