p0135 HELPPPPP

Ok this started awhile back with a bad 02 sensor, bank 1 sensor 1. I replaced it with a Bosch not knowing about the problems with them. About 2 weeks down the road it started setting several codes. After looking on here I went and returned it and ordered a Denso 234-4162. It was fine for awhile then started setting p0135. Checked everything I could. I did find a broken ground cable from the back of the block to the firewall. I replaced that and check the others. All good. So I ended up replacing the Denso again. The p0135 is still coming back. So I went and got one from another 4runner with a known good 02. Even say's Toyota on it. The p0135 still keeps coming up. I tried going to the TTORA site with the manual's but the one's for my 96 say's document not found.
So I figure what better place then here to ask for help.
Is there something else I am missing?
I was going to test the wires from the 02 but I have no idea where they run to test them for a break or something.

I have looked the harness over the best I can without pulling it out and pulling all the covering off it. I'm trying to find out where each wire from the 02 sensor goes so I can test with an ohm meter. If I can find that out I can find which wire is broke or shorted and run a new wire.

You don't need to know where the wires go to test the resistance. It would be tested at the pins of the plug. You would need the manual to tell you what pins to test and what is an acceptable range of resistance though. Do you have 1 or 2 catalytic converters?

I have 1 cat.

Are you talking the plug on the 02 itself or the plug from the harness that the 02 plugs into?

I wanted to know where the wires run to from the vehicle side of the 02 sensor plug to what wire at the ECM or wherever the 4 wire got to to check for a bad wire.

With 2 Denso 02's and now a Toyota 02 giving the same P0135 code it leads me to think there is a bad wire or maybe ECM.

Am I thinking the wrong way of doing it? If I am don't be afraid to tell me. LOL

Cal spec or federal? Double check your part # for what emissions you have. And double check the ground on the plenum by the diagnostic port. And look for green crud at the connector. Hope that helps.

From what I understand it has 1 cat. so it's Federal. Ground is good.
What connector are you talking about? May be one I missed.

Similar Issue

I'm having almost the same problem.

I'm throwing a P0136, "O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2." I replaced this post-cat sensor in January 2011, haven't even driven 3,000 miles since then.

I replaced it with Denso 234-4153.

I inspected the sensor wiring and the only thing that caught my eye was the presence of fluid on it. But this shouldn't cause it to fail right?

Should I too diagnose the same way with an ohmmeter? If so, which wires are B+ and HT?

As I understand it, (since I have not done it--only read about it), The URD sim will not correct a P0136. The sim requires a functioning rear sensor. It will only correct a P0420--Catalytic Converter Below Efficiency.

Try cleaning plug and connector with contact cleaner. An oil soak can definitely screw up a connection. The P0136 is an anomaly in the sensor voltage, not the heater circuit, so HT+ is not involved. An OBD scan tool will show you the output curve of the sensor. You need a '96 FSM to get the pin-outs at the FSM. Sorry, I don't have one.

Well I finally got time to get into the wiring. I found the wire from the sensor connector on the harness side was pulled apart but couldn't see that it was. Found it with an ohm meter. I spent most of today looking around junkyards and found none. I can get them from 98's up but the plug is different. So the search online begins to find a new connector, harness side for the front o2 sensor.

Plug should be the same on all '96-'98 4Runners, and 49-state '99 and '00 as well. They use the same sensor, wire length changes according to 2/4WD and transmission. Know that a '99 NH truck can still have Cali. emissions--you need to count cats (Cali's have two) or check the emissions label under the hood.

Ok. I got a little more time into it and what I did was experiment with the 98 plug I got. I can get it apart and get the actual metal connector part out with the wire attached. So when I can I will be able to replace it. If I remember I will take pics. I think the worst part will be getting the harness side plug to where I can get to it as you know there's really not much room by the exhaust to work.
 
Thank you for the info, I cleared the code today.

If it pops up again I'll clean it up and cover the junction with some conduit and electrical tape. I'll go from there..
