Hi everyone, I wanted to tell everyone about my experience with a P0306 code that came up suddenly yesterday. Everything I read told me I would need an injector, however that wasn't the case.
About 75,000 miles ago, I replaced the spark plug wires with Prestolite brand. They are supposed to be OEM quality, and I was told that Prestolite makes wires for many auto manufacturers. I also replaced the spark plugs with OEM NGK approx. 15,000 miles ago.
I pulled the plug - looked perfect (phew). I then had my wife try to start the car with the plug connected to the wire outside of the cylinder - no spark.
I pulled plug #4, swapped the plugs - no spark in cylinder #6.
I swapped coil packs and the associated wires with cylinders 3&5, still no spark in cylinder #6.
I determined it must be the wire going to cylinder #6.
I live in a small town, so finding NGK or OEM wires is at least 1 hour away, making a round trip about 2.5 hours. So, I went with NAPA Belden wires. I read good things about them. I also bought 3 rubber boots for the coil packs that have never been replaced.
Yep, that fixed the problem. In my limited understanding, usually wires go bad intermittently, however this was sudden. I knew it was not likely to be the plugs - again usually slow degradation of MPG and performance and sometimes intermittent CEL.
A good friend is a Toyota Master Tech, he told me that he has never heard of a wire going suddenly like that.
Just thought I would give my $.02 since everything I read was "replaced injector to fix". Glad I didn't just tear into the truck only to find it was just a spark plug wire.
