painted limited fender flares pic request

ive been thinking about painting my limited fender flares and possibly the bumpers on my silver 99 limited 4r. the previous owners didnt take care of the pant and it has many knicks and spots where bug guts have eaten throught the paint.

who has painted limited fender flares and bumbers? what paint do you reccomend? what is the best way to prep the flares? and easiest way to paint them? remove them from the car or leave them on?

I'm thinking I may do the same and paint them matte/satin black. I have a limited 96 evergreen pearl and don't really like the limited paint scheme with the dark green. I'm definitely not paying a shop to do it and I'll probably just rattle can it. About as far as I'll go is getting automotive paint and use my uncles gravity feed gun.

Another option I've thought about is using some plati dip and then spray painting over it. I could just peel it off if I hate it.

yea. my bumbers just look terrible because the previous owner and yea i was thinking some rattle can to. but i dont want it it look cheap and i cant deside if i wanna do flat black or a gloss. and i just wanted some pics to see if i would really like it before i did it myself

I was thinking about it too. My silver flares have a few scratches and is fading.

Would like to know if anyone has done anything other than bedliner?

I did this on my own with the spray paint bed liner.. I forget the brand name, maybe rust o leam.. I cant remember.. Anyways I would recommend not taking them off the truck. The little clips that hold them on are very fragile and break easy. Just take the time and tape up everything then paint. I would paint the flares then paint the bumpers if you still think you want to.. I personally think they look a little funny with painted bumpers..

Well, I was going to stay away from bedliner on this project but that looks really good. I already used a little on the rear corner panels because I have a dent on the driver rear. I needed to do something to cover up the rust back there so I guess I'll go the bedliner route....I just can't stay away from the stuff. :biggrin2:

I went the spray on Rust-Oleum bed coating also. Its been holding up great with no issues at all.

For the prep use green scouring pads on the factory paint to give the spray-on something to bit into. Just watch the edges and don't hit the body.

For tape I would recommend using the thin blue painters tape that is used to make flames etc. This will allow you to tape along the fenders much better than the thick painters tape. Once you get it nice at tight then mask it with the thick blue painters tape. It will take a little more time but it will turn out much better.

Yeah I love that spray on bed liner by rust oleam.. I went crazy with it and painted alot of stuff.. I hit the wood grain dash parts with it, the back plastics on the rear hatch and rear bumper, roof rack and sprayed my tube bumper with it.. It has a good texture and is fairly tough. the only part it has chipped is my roof rack just becuase of the crap I carry on it.

Yup mine are loose so I was able to pull them out Alittle and shove the tape in there then once I had a whole section taped off I started sanding. If you use a power sander like I did then put a few layers of tape right at the edge of the flare. This way when your sanding the top of the flare if you accidentally hit the tape it won't go through and scratch your paint. I think I used 4 cans total for all flares and bumpers. I might have used more just can't remember. Also you are going to have to do the bottom of the body below the door I just shut the door and sprayed it when I did the rest. Since then I've also done my side mirrors. They came out pretty good as well.

that looks good. ill probable just do my flares. then if i want more ill do the bumper. even thought thats the part with the most paint chips. imo the bumpers are a little to much but still looks good. and what does the mirrors look like from a Distance??

and what do yall think about a gloss black? you think that would look better or the bed liner?

Gloss black would look good if done right with a clear coat. The spray-on bed liner gives a good, tough finish for the DIYer.

Thanks, I also sprayed the rocker panels, which took a bit of prep work to tape and mask-off the bottom half of the doors and door openings. I sprayed the rockers with the doors in the open position and painter's tarps over the vehicle then tucked into the interior. Look forward to seeing your finished pics.

Every time I look at your truck I am reminded of how beautiful it is. Nicely done on the flares Brian. Times to get some mud on those tires though!!

i did my bumpers to start. took me about 6 hours, removed grill, fog light and blinkers. gave her a good sanding, a coat of filler primer and two cans of flat black spray paint from advanced auto.
