painting a 1988 runner shell

hey guys,

this is my first runner, and im just beginning to make it how i want it to be.

my question might be stupid, but what is the best way to paint the shell?

can i just clean it then lightly sand it, then rattle can it the color i want it?

By shell, do you mean the removable top?

If so, that's up to you. You could make it smooth, and paint it with regular car paint. You can scuff it and just paint over the stock texture. Or rhinoline.

I'd rhino line it. It has the stockish looking texture but at the same time also offering a little protection.

Since its fiberglass, make sure anything you use will work on fiberglass.

This. Call the manufacturer and ask them what they recommend for prep, but you're probably just going to clean it.

i would rhino line it, but its way too expensive. im probably just going to rough it up and paint it with fiberglass ok rattle can paint

Idk if they specifically mean rhino brand bed liner. Just spray on. Companies like rustoleum and others make rattle can bedliners. There are also roll on type applications.

i use huruliner it comes in different colors and as long as you spray it with UV protectorate clear coat it will never weep

Try to get a matte or semi-gloss finish. They look kind of stupid with a gloss finish on them, IMO.

just finished painting, used the rustoleum bedliner kit from walmart. had enough to line the bed, paint the shell and coat the roll bar. what an incredible difference. once i gather the courage i am going to rip out the interior and coat the entire tub.
