Painting Interior Pieces

Has anybody on here ever attempted painting interior panels/pieces? I have access to a 99 center console to do the swap in my 98 but it is gray and my interior is oak/tan. Can this be done? Are there suppliers of interior paint/dyes that can be matched up? I've done a little googling but didn't find much. Thanks.

It can be done. I don't know about the paint color you need since the only ones I have are black and grey. Preparation, Preparation, Preparation is the key to a good paint job!

I did a little more research after making this post. I don't think any paint/dye exists that a person can buy to match a particular interior color. Too bad, it would make the 99 center console an easier find. Please correct me if someone knows better.

It depends what exact color it is you are trying to match. I matched the color of the tan roof light/sunglass holder almost perfectly with SEM Color Coat Saddle Tan, but the tan interior uses multiple shades of tan and brown. You don't really need to match it exactly; there are enough tones there already that if it is slightly off, you won't notice.

I have had very good results from the SEM Color Coat. It is pretty durable, but then again, I don't touch it much as it is on the roof console. The SEM color coat is designed specifically for these vinyl interior pieces, so it should be a good bet.

There was one guy that went super in depth dying his interior black. He baked the plastics til they sweat to soak the dye in, but I don't think you want to do that much work.

ive painted my door handles about 6 months ago and they are holding up great!
1 coat of adhesive promoter
2 coats of primer
3 or 4 coats of black
2 coats of clear

it can be done!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip guys! My initial searching did not bring up SEM products. When I looked at their website they actually have a paint match to the oak interior. Now I hope the junk yard still has the gray 99 console I found a couple days ago.

I ordered a Battery Tender from them Monday night and it came this afternoon. They show the tan paint as well as adhesion promoter in their catalog. Be careful, there are several different shades of tan/brown. You aren't really sure which one is the oak SEM lists.

Im converting my interior to black and I was initially going to paint all the trim pieces black but I decided to try using vinyl wraps instead. The same kind of thing they use to wrap cars. And people use carbon fiber to accent interior pieces. I just purchased a tiny piece of matte black to test out first and I am pretty impressed by it. If it's tough enough to be used on the outside of a car it should work fairly good for the inside. And if it gets scratched, the piece can easily be re-wrapped instead of having to sand down and repaint. Here is a picture of the test piece.

Bumping a old thread....I'm trying to do this vinyl wrap thing too. I want to do it for the whole dash and the trim, im talking dash, inside the doors, basically whatever isnt black im trying to make it black...is that possible using vinyl wrap?? heres a pic of what im trying to vinyl wrap....basically all the none black parts...

dirt bike trick is to use rite dye to dye the plastic pieces. just soak them in the dye for 24 hours in warm water i think it was.
