Skip the paint. The blood of 10,000 unicorns works pretty well. Rustoleum makes it in spray form. Ask at the front desk at Autozone or the like. They keep the good stuff in the back.

You can also use acetone to wipe it down before paint...but brake cleaner is prob easier. Rustoleum makes good spray paint for metal. Just a tip, after a few coats of primer, I would let it dry for a couple days. Keep it in a dry area with minimal dust during this process. After that, hit it was several coats of whatever color you want and, again, give it a couple days to dry. I didn't wait long enough when painting my rims and it didn't come out as nicely. My savage sliders, I was a bit more patient and paint came out much better.
Also, I noticed that when the spray can gets low, the paint comes out a little splotchy. I would only use down to about 3/4 of the can when spraying surfaces that can be seen. The parts that can't be seen as easily, go ahead and finish off the can.

This was my experience with rustoleum also but the krylon I mentioned dried in minutes and it went on smooth as glass. Just can't say enough good about krylon rust tough paint.

Just painted my savage rear with swing out... Came out great... Prep, lots of coats, and taking your time are key. I would strongly suggest using a self etching primer, really helps the paint adhere to the bare metal. I used acetone to remove the oil, then a light sanding to scuff the metal, 2-3 coats of self etching primer (rust oleum worked for me), then two to three coats of spray paint... Again, just cheap rustoleum... Turned out fantastic. Enjoy!

I just got on t4r.org; I don't check it as often as others do. But what I meant is whatever you decide as far as technique, and paint choice, post pictures for the next person.
I'm excited for you, man. I want to see the finished product because I'm considering the savage front and rear as well.

That works to prep surfaces, but dawn dish soap works real good to just have to dry it as you go.

This is the second picture I've seen on T4R in the last week or so of someone grinding with no eye/face protection at all.
It's completely my opinion but I think you guys are nuts.

As someone else already said, self etching primer will do wonders for paint adhesion and finish. If you have a auto body paint supply in your area, they typically have rattle cans of the stuff on the shelf.
When I painted my bumpers and axles on my wheeler I ended up buying gloss black implement (tractor) paint at said paint supply shop. It's a two part enamel paint, and it's tough as nails. If you can get access to an HVLP gun or go get a cheap one at HF, I would highly recommend something like this.
Bumpers look sweet! Can't wait to see them on the truck.
