Painting over rust?

I was thinking about cleaning up my rear axle and coating it with something. I know I will not be able to get it all down to metal. Any suggestions as to what to use to coat? Rustolem or some kind of undercoat spray? Thanks for comments

No expert on rust here in texas but from what I've read on here, "POR15" is the best way to go to deal with rust. I think there is one product used to clean up and another to cover it and keep it away. Luck. :cowboy:

I used Eastwood Rubberized Rust Encapsulator undercoating. I like it it for now, but I have only had it on for a month or two. I like having it be rubberized so it is not so hard and brittle

Brush-on POR-15 (POR = Paint Over Rust). Just did two coats on my frame a few weeks ago, too early to tell longevity but it looks great and goes on thick. Miserable work though, be sure to wear gloves and sleeves or you'll have it on you for weeks. I've used the Rustoleum spray a number of times and it doesn't last.

Yeah POR15 is nice. Chassis saver is nice. Have used both. Highly recommend to use their prerogative chemicals. And do it on a VERY HOT HUMID DAY. These products cure from humidity. You could clean up the rust and use por15 chemical prep. Which allows you to paint over clean metal. For more prep questions. Do your self a favor. And call them.

If you have flaking rust you really need to hit it with a wire cup on a drill or grinder before putting anything on it. Eye protection, breathing protection, and once you get started it's kind of cool slaying all that rust.

Either way you have to take off a good majority of the rust if it has started pitting or flaking. When I did mine I took a wire brush and wire wheel to it to get all the deep stuff out. And then I used a rust converter, and then rust oleum over that. But just a year later it started bubbling under the paint. Prep work is the key. There's no easy way around it if you want to do a good job. Once you get to where it's just surface rust you can cover it with a converter. But use a high end product. The stuff I used was cheap and didn't last
