Hi All,
After hours spent locating the intermittent parasitic draw on my battery, I have finally gotten it down to the factory jbl synthesis amp. Every third or fourth time I turn the car off, a faint static noise can be heard from the tweeters. Turn the key back too acc or on and then off again, usually it goes away, sometimes it remains. Doesn't seem to matter if the radio is on or off before turning the key. Need to fix it before I get stranded somewhere (again).
After hours more searching and wading through posts on this and other forums, I am still looking for my best options for repair, replacement, and the definitive answers to a couple of questions. My car is long out of warranty, so the TSB / dealership fix is out, they will only sell the whole module (sub, box, and amp) for an absurd price. Online prices are also in the $3-400 range. For that price, I'd rather look at upgrading the head unit, thereby gaining an aux. input that I'm lacking now. But, I'm happy with the factory sound and looks, and may be selling the car in the next year or two, and so am not really keen on that idea either. What I really want to do is just replace the amp with a used, but known good jbl unit or an aftermarket multi-channel unit that would retain all (or at least most) of the current functionality.
Through all the threads I've read through, I still yet to find a conclusive answer of the feasibility of keeping everything oem, but replacing the amplifier with an aftermarket. If there is anyone out there that can point me in the right direction, it would be most appreciated, as this is probably my preferred fix.
Or if any of you audiophiles out there that have done a whole system replacement still have a working factory amp laying around, I would be glad to offer you a reasonable price for it. Keeping my eyes on ebay too.
Or if any one has had any luck repairing the oem turn on /off switch on the amp, please let me know - I have a call in to United Radio, after reading one other forum user may have sent a unit to them under similar circumstances.
Any and all input is MOST appreciated! Thanks!
Car info: 05' LTD, V8 - 10 Speaker JBL Synthesis w/ RDS and 6 disk in-dash.
