Parking Brake Question

If I am getting 0 clicks when I pull up to engage my parking brake does this indicate the drum shoes are over adjusted? I am troubleshooting what I think may be the root cause of a noise issue I'm having.

Maybe. It could also be your bellcranks are frozen or some other hang up in the cable system (bellcranks are most common.) See if the rear wheels are excessively hot after a drive. That would indicate over adjustment. Not so hot means bellcranks or other cable problem(given zero clicks. Bellcranks or cable can also lock in engaged position causing hot brakes, but then I would think you'd have more clicks.)

I'm getting a creaking sound from my rear wheels when braking to a stop and the parking brake cable seems to be pretty tight. When I get home I will try backing the shoes off with the star adjusters and see about freeing up the bellcranks if they're seized.

There is also one bad news scenario to be aware of. I don't think it's your case because of the zero click. But when the rear axle seals leak gear oil gets on the shoes and they swell, creating what appears to be an overadjusted situation. Probably best to take a look inside the drums and check your shoes just to be safe. Also, be aware that if your e-brake does not work, or is never used, your auto-adjust on the drums does not work.

But I doubt that's your problem. Usually it gets looser and you need to adjust travel by making it tighter. Cables don't get tighter as they age. It's only your problem if the last guy was an idiot. But go ahead and try, it won't hurt anything.

After I arrived home from work tonight I got out and immediately checked the temp of the drums. I could rest my hand on the drivers side without a problem but the passenger side was like bowels-of-hell hot. That will certainly be the side I start digging into first.

After I arrived home from work tonight I got out and immediately checked the temp of the drums. I could rest my hand on the drivers side without a problem but the passenger side was like bowels-of-hell hot. That will certainly be the side I start digging into first.

Turns out the passenger side shoes were adjusted waaaaay to tight. I was able to recreate the sound by jacking the rear end up and spinning that tire. Consider it solved!
