PC Mag says Entune is "best"

The Entune in my 4R is pretty much the same thing I had in my 2015 Lexus NX, and I haven't had a problem with either of them. I actually prefer the touch screen of the Toyota more. While the GPS does not pick the "best" route all the time, I do not see glitches, do not suffer from reboots, and have had an overall good experience with it.
In my mind, while it lacks the options that other companies have, simplicity keeps the world turning and keeps me happy.

Factory head units are always years behind the aftermarket. I wouldn't expect Apple carplay or Android auto to show up on mainstream factory head units for several more years.

If you accept the limitations it's not bad. It's not powerful or fast, but it's a decent OS to control the various basic functions of the radio.
If you compare it to a pure android OS - it's not going to compare well. A 2yr old Galaxy S5 I use does everything better. Especially voice recognition and commands. I can just casually talk to my android with and get anything from live traffic reports to math calculations hands free. Shit it even calculates driving time to all of my calendar appointments and tells me 10 minutes before I need to leave to arrive on time. It learns when I go to work, where I work, where I live, and how long each drive takes. It's just light years better, but it's also constantly updated. I've only used the entune nav maybe 3 times. My phone will give directions over blue tooth and it works great without the map visible. I can't see any reason to use the crappy nav system.
The combination does everything I need. My phone will cover all the hard stuff. All I need the car side to do is stream the audio. It does that well enough. My biggest wish would be for the car to just mirror my phone screen and for it to allow the phone to access all the stuff I get via a USB2 dongle directly. Otherwise I don't expect much and it works fine.

I really like the Entune in my 2016 4R -- but I should probably mention that all I ever had prior to this was basic AM/FM/cassette deck, so the Entune is a MAJOR step up for me. 
My only, minor, complaint is that when playing music off a USB flash drive, it won't let me use playlists. It only has the option to play the songs alphabetically or randomly.
I still plan to get a separate gps, mainly so I can do topographic maps and also so I take it with me when hiking.

I hate to say it, but in comparison to the sh*t show that comes with my wife's 2015 forester, Entune is light years ahead. 50% of the time we can't even connect our phones with the bluetooth in the subaru. Don't even get me started on the NAV... total POS. Yes, entune isn't amazing but i have experienced worse...
My family has had probably a dozen Subarus over the past 30 years. They always lag a decade behind everyone else when it comes to interior amenities.

PC Mag... I stopped reading right there. Nothing they've written since the early 90's is worthwhile information to me. Better to use it to wrap fish, start campfires, wipe your a**, etc.
If you want computer tech information, read MaximumPC instead. Yes it's lots of bleeding edge hardware, but nowhere between their covers will you find a review of a car audio/nav system. If you're calling Entune a computer system, you might as well include my cell phone, the Nintendo Wii, and that fancy key fab I use to remote start my car. You could also include a review on the 20 year old computers still running MSDOS as an information display at air traffic control facilities across the country (sadly on this I'm not joking).

The factory system drives me nuts. I use it only for the radio and, yes, as a conduit for my phone because for all other features I have to use my phone. The VR is a joke and the Nav actually causes me pain to use.
The problem is that I (like many others, I suspect) bought Toyota because we want a reliable, dependable vehicle that works. The OEM unit simply does not.
