"Performance Chip" questions

I wonder why the Toyota engineers weren't smart enough to think of this?

You should definitely install a Nitrous Oxide system!

Toyota has the optimal settings to meet emissions and provide the safest performance.

Nitrous Oxide is a time bomb just waiting to go off in your engine!

Not if it is correctly adjusted. When one is on a quest for maximum hp it is necessary to take some small risks.

Toyota has the optimal settings to ... provide the safest performance.
What does tuning engine performance have to do with safety? Stupid Toyota engineers; obviously, any clown can design a better chip than them.

Toyota's tuning insures they stay in a safe zone for engine operation under any condition which can be altered by aftermarket tuning. I'm not saying you'll blow the motor but Toyota and all car manufacturers keep it safe in the case of a lower than optimal octane of fuel is used or a "bad" tank of gas plus emissions is the big factor and all car brands stay on the safe side of that as well.

I guess if engineers are stupid then these tuners are so smart and should be raking in the bucks but the truth is for every tuner company that makes it there's plenty that disappear after they blow up a few motors.

Nitrous is actually a very safe and effective modification but it take someone alot of knowledge before i would let them mess with a NOS system on any of my vehicles. The problem with NOS is that there are few software programs to really take advantage and even fewer (other than the cars own knock sensors---if installed and how sensitive they are) to prevent problems. I have no doubt that the 4.7 could take it knowing just how well toyota builds engines, but what I dont know is who built the guy thats going to install the NOS on the truck. Im more concerned with that than the actual system.

Koz--

some of the points that you bring up in your post are most certainly valid. You also have to remember that bikes are high performance in nature already and that fact that they generally have vastly more rev ready engines allows them to take to modifications more especially those that open up the breathing tracts. Bikes are not cars and while some of the same theory applies to tuning, the application of it varies.

As for you comments about 300 bucks, you are never ever ever going to see parts as cheap for a 4runner as you will a bike, a mustang, a chevy diesel. There are just less people trying to modify them and so R&D costs must be passed along to the consumer. I would love to see prices for parts come down and while the magnaflow exhaust and the new volant intake are certainly on the less expensive side, the more complex that a modification becomes....blah blah blah=more money out of our pocket.

With the tuning of the chip, i agree that AF Ratio should be monitored and generally not just a tail pipe insert as that is one of the least effective methods.

I am actually waiting to hear back from a buddy of mine that works with/for Jim Conforti and I worked with in conjunction at Powerchips. Both of which are the absolute tops in siemens/bosch software tuning. While I know that the 4runner does not use a siemens or bosch setup, these are considered the most intricate on the market. If there is any info about not going with unichip, on any vehicle, ill hear about it.

Out- you are absolutely right on the AFR's. The range that one should see under most WOT applications is in the 11.5-12.0 range and nothing more lean that about a 16.0:1. I would assume that toyota actually runs a bit rich through out the rev band especially in the low and mid range as that has been my experience with most of the cars that I have tuned. In addition they probably run a bit back on the timing in the upper band to ensure that pre ignition and detonation are minimized.

Ron- I agree with you on this one. There are hundreds of companies that have shown up done a few botched jobs and then disappeared, never to be heard from again (or show up under a different name---damn Hennessey!) As for your comments about emissions and octane rating. Aftermarket software normally mandates that 91 or 93 premium is used to and by doing so, engine emissions are generally improved.

outrunner,,,please keep us informed on the unichip progress. I am very interested and would like to here the good news from the guinea pig first....

thanks a million man...

Glad I could help. I'll keep ya'll posted:D

Now, let's start the conversation of how I need to go about dynoing w/ the center dif...locked or unlocked? The dyno I plan on using is in-ground dynojet (inertial) AWD. Any ideas?

well when i purchased my volant from Jason@burtman today he mentioned that he is more than likely able to get the Unichip as well.

So who knows, Out, if you and i have good things to say about the unichip..i think someone owes us some kick backs. When do you expect to order?

Today or tomorrow...When ever I get around to it. Have you found one any cheaper than Martel Bros? 4x4parts.com sells it for like $900 but they ask exactly what brand of exhaust and intake you have for more "mod specific" tuning. I was thinking about calling them and asking if they would match martel bros price... And yes I think some kickback is in order;): :D

theres alwasy some risk with anything. Look at an intake, a manufacturer can void your warranty if they desire it from that.

Also doing things the old way with distributors and ignition coils have the same level of issues that could arrise but from what i have seen, most people these days are scared of doign software because its not mechanical and as such its just a black box with P.F.M (pure fuking magic) going on inside.

My questions that i have currently asked unichip (since im on hold with them right now) is how did they do specific tunign for CAI/HEADER/Exhaust setups. The deal is that they used a true flow CAI and headers on a tundra.

I just spoke with Frank (i believe his name was over there) and they have impressed me. Not only do they tune for closed and open loops but they do AFR calibrations under dyno conditions and also real world driving. In addition, those that are worried about burning something up, the chip actually has retarded maps that it will switch to to prevent pre ignition and detonation when its is detected. The chip is actually tuned to 92 octane which will allow for 91 or 93 to be used with no issues.

Honestly, as someone that has done software reflashes with bmws for years, i must say that these guys know their stuff. Their R&D is quite exptensive

Awesome. Thanks for your research. I wonder how the Unichip accounts for altitude adjustment since I'm way up here at 5500 ft. Also, I heard that the PnP Unichips have two maps built in an A and B map. I wonder if the A map is just Unichip's stock map for our vehicle and B is tuned for whatever mods we may have, I'd be interested to know if they provide both...

The density altitude conversions are done by the ECU/MAF and then adjusted by the Unichip. So even at higher density altitudes such as with an OEM application, the car will adapt, its just with the unichip that the Maps are more optimized. You should see a very heft improvment since the stock maps are generally pretty rich and as such even with altitude corrections, a good bit off

the chip does come with both and A and B map...B being the more power producing map and A being the more tame of the two.

so does this mean you get to switch between the two at any time or is it a thing where it switches itself when it thinks it needs too?

you yourself have the ability to swap..thats what the switch on the front is.

I still cant find the unichip for the 4.7 v8 anywhere. All I keep finding is the one for the 4.0 v6. can someone send me a link???
