So here's my first update in a long time AND my first update of the build. If you're just joining us here on Page 41, I am beginning my solid axle swap with a Toyota 8" axle, triple-rate coilovers and 3-link.

Today we broke down my axle so I can send the the third member out to be geared. Once I get the third member back, we'll begin building up the axle with the Marlin Knuckle kits, Marlin Chromoly Birfields, Trail-Gear HiSteer, IFS Hub Assemblies and the big brake upgrade. Pics?

honestly, this axle breakdown is easier than taking apart the power antenna motor :lol:

Hey Gig! It was cool to finally meet you too, although I was disappointed you look nothing like your avatar pic :bolt:

Re-gearing is an awesome alternative to forced induction...we don't actually do gear setups here but I can send them out and have them done...see ya soon!

Looks like it's an 82 or 83 axle? Any plans for an upper axle gusset or any other reinforcements? Also, are you using wheel spacers to get the width out to 4runner track width?

It's an 85 axle- you can tell by the factory truss on the bottom (if you can even see it in the pics...)

I have the TG full front face armor and upper truss, they'll be welded on shortly

To match the width I am doing 1986 IFS hubs (3") and 2" wheel spacers for a near-perfect width match

Where did you send the 3rd to get it regeared?

I hope you did not trash the half circles for the rear of the knuckle felts. Unless you are ordering new ones they do not come in the kits. Good looking build so far. Don't let an axle rebuild scare you all it is is following directions, messy job but not something you should farm out. We try and to several all at the same time with out Land Cruiser club, makes it go so much smoother.

I wish i was her too.. i'd never leave the house. :wow2:
I got me a buddy who lives down south. He mentioned to me about the "eastcoast gearing place" he has dealt with them before. if you are planning to regear he told me thats the place to do it. Normally, at 60 MPH she sits around 2000RPM. does that sound about right? I will be back shortly to see you.. I have some more work that needs to be done on the truck.. was great to have met you!

It's at a local transmission shop- East End Transmissions...same guy who built my rear.

I saved them but I got Trail Gear Rock Rings that are 3x the thickness

Yeahh gotta beef it up...besides the armor, we also have the bulletproof Marlin rebuild kit, Marlin birfs, Yukon gears, ARP Studs, HiSteer...yup it'll be plenty beefy...thanks!!

nothing too bad... just what you saw. when i saw you last.. since then the transmission cooler broke loose.(might be time for a replacement any how) I might do something with the exhaust anyhow..
