And I'm back!

Picked this up last night.

1998 4Runner 4x4 auto w/ 158k miles
255/85/16 Maxxis Bighorns
4xInnovations Sliders
PO's rear bumper
Toytec coil overs
OME 890s
Aussie Locked rear

Immediate needs are a DD from Cleveland to Chattanooga which this isn't quite a good option for currently. But since it'll only have to serve for 1-2 years I picked it up with intentions of modifying it for DD life a little

Plan is to crank the coil overs down to 0" and swap out the rears with a factory set I have access to. Then trade the 255s for a set of 265/70 for daily driving. Then the maintenance to get it reliable starts...
Lower and Upper Ball Joints, replace busted CV, front brakes, sway bar end links
Rear axle seals, bearing, rear brakes
Engine Tune up with plugs, wires, etc.

And maybe some goo-be-gone for all those decals on the window. Or maybe you like them? I dunno, it's not for me that's for sure. I've got half a dozen company decals in my garage thinking I'll do something "cool" with them but I don't like them enough lol.

Solid platform though. I like 98's.

Why don't you crank those coil overs right on down to my place, and I'll crank my stock setup up your way.

Deal?

Its hard to find other 98 owners on here everyone seems to own one that is 99+

Honestly, that's what I was looking for. But to find any 3rd gen with 158k miles around here is hard enough as it is. So I sprung for this one even with the list of maintenance items it needs. Already found the roof leak, and the roof itself is no longer green from all the years of being covered by the roof rack. The interior is really clean too except maybe the center console cover. I think it's always had seat covers because the seat fabric is extremely clean and unworn

Oh, nice! I have a 97 Limited, so I'm in the <99 category with you!

Edited to add: Shit I just realized your not at all a T4R newb! Take the rest of my post with that in mind. Just trying to help, but looks like you could teach me a thing or three!

As for DD'ing it, I DD'd mine for many years, but only last year did the commute go from 12 miles RT to 60. It's honestly not a terrible DD if you treat it right, but things definitely started to wear quicker than I wanted, and I retired her from DD'ing to preserve her for off-road fun.

I have a 3" lift, and have always had 265/75's, and really never had terrible MPGs (17/20ish).

In regards to things that wear from DD'ing more, I've found that anything rubber that is in someway related to suspension is going to wear a lot quicker with a lift. LBJs, tie rod ends, CV boots, sway bar links, etc. Sounds like you have that all figured out though with your planned maintenance tasks.

Have fun! Plus it already has your t4r.org sticker!

haha no worries. I'm hoping to only DD this thing for 1-2 years and then it be a dedicated trail rig at that point. I'll leave the UCA bushings alone until I swap out for some after market control arms. I'm borrowing a siblings car until I get this one ready, and I hate putting 60 miles per day on someone else's ride so I'm probably cutting it close on my time frame just by doing ball joints and the rear axle seals/bearings.

Parts get here Wednesday from Camelback and I'd like to be done before my 6 day California business trip later this month so that I'm not taking up my wife's parking spot in our garage while I'm gone.

Thats an extremely nice find! I also have a green 98 sr5 w/ a 5 speed but mine has 240k miles now

Nice truck. Once those maintenance items are good you're probably set. Don't forget to add radiator/external cooler for piece of mind soon :)

I am sure you knew that, of course, but sometimes when you have a laundry list it's easy to forget an item

Do you need a 4runner as your DD? Just asking cause I have a 2003 VW Jetta TDI that is the DD for my wife. That little thing has plenty of power and still manages to get 45/48 MPG. The prices on them has gone into the toilet since the whole VW emissions scandal. I was just looking and you can score one for 3000-4000 grand. Mines got 180,000 on it and still drives like it's new.

That's on the eventual list of things to get done. List number 2 haha. I'd like to knock that out in a month or two. The stuff I'm doing immediately is the stuff that needs to be done before I carry my 1.5 year old in it (LBJ failure and brakes are shot due to rear axle seals).

Thanks for the reminder though ha

Yes and no. It's only going to be a DD for 1-2 years. When kid number two comes along, as long as we can stick to our plan this time, I'd like to bump the wife up from her subaru legacy to a gx470/100 series type ride and I take over driving the legacy everyday. All while keeping this 3rd gen and it being promoted to trail rig/expo vehicle.
